“I do. But this isn’t about me. This is about you. If you wanted to fuck someone else, you should have told me. I might have offered to join. At least, we could have discussed it. I deserved the truth.”

“And what have you been up to?” I turn the questions on her. “You’re a sexual person, Harper. Much more than me these days. Should I believe you’ve been at home, sulking over my loss?”

Her lips press into a flat line. “You’re trying to distract me from the evidence right in front of my face.” She waves a hand at my bare chest. “Just come clean.”

I glance away and shake my head, my patience a thin thread ready to snap. “This is why we ended. This back and forth…it’s not healthy and I’m tired of it.”

“You should have called and let me know, instead of leaving me hanging for two weeks.”

I doubt she was waiting around. “You could have called me, too. The phone works both ways. But neither of us called because neither of us cared.”

She stomps her foot. “I told you I was working through some stuff. I thought you’d be happy.”

“I am, but that doesn’t change us being over.” Jesus. It’s like were still together.

She pokes my chest. “I could have cheated on you a bunch of times, but I didn’t. For you. Too bad you can’t say the same.” She whirls around and stalks off, leaving the way she came. Before rounding the corner, she stops and glares at me. “If the girl you’re fucking is from Ryland, I’ll find out and give her the old Harper treatment.”

She tosses her hair over her shoulder and disappears into the night.

I stand there for a moment, my heart racing faster than it should. I knew ending things with Harper would be dramatic, but I didn’t expect this.

My shoulders tense. If she finds out I’m with Kensi, shit will get real bad, real fast. I won’t be on campus to watch out for Kensi if Harper starts meddling—or worse, turns her anger on Kensi. Even if I could find a way to work nearby to make sure Kensi’s okay while she’s at school, she wouldn’t like it.

I drop down on one of the couches and rest my head in my hands. This isn’t what I wanted—Kensi in the hot seat because of me.

“Everything okay?” Kensington’s voice floats to my ears. “Is she gone?”

She saw us? Shit. For how long was she watching? Did she hear us, too?

I lift my head. “Yeah. She’s gone.”

Kensington stands in the doorway to the house. The lights inside shine down on her burgundy hair. She changed into baggy cotton shorts and a loose sweater that hangs off one shoulder. The outfit shouldn’t seem sexy, but on her it is.

I stand and walk to her. “Let’s go inside.”

She backs up a few steps to let me in. “Why was she in the backyard? How’d she even get back here? All the gates have locks.”

“The gate on the side of the house has a key I keep hidden under a rock.”

She stumbles back, laughing. “I thought Uncle Colton taught you better. Guess not. Wait until my dad hears this. He won’t believe it.”

I close and lock the door, then I crowd her with my big body and tickle her sides. “Leave my dad out of this, and don’t tell him or your dad about the key.”

She swats at my hands and squirms away from me. “Now I have leverage on you. I’m so filing this away in case of an emergency.”

“Now you’re going to get it.” I charge her.

She bolts past the sectional in the great room and whips around the corner, headed toward the grand foyer.

I’m on her tail, not even running at top speed.

She veers right, ready to race up the stairs. I catch her by her waist and spin her to face me before pinning her up against the nearby wall.

My heart races, and her breath comes in fast spurts, her eyes bright with excitement. I swoop down and kiss her parted lips. She hooks her arms around my neck and opens her mouth wider. Our tongues meet, tangle. I grind my hips against her, and she moans.

“Man, I want you so badly.” I nip at her bottom lip. “I can’t wait until we move.”

“I want you, too,” she whispers, still breathless. “In the meantime, you should change the lock on the gate. I don’t know Harper well, but I wouldn’t put it past her to make a copy or already have one.”
