Her drawn brows have me thinking she doesn’t. She glances at Azure and then at me. “What are you two? Friends? Friends with benefits? A couple?”

“Why do we have to be something?” I rest my elbows on the table like Azure.

Harper studies him for a long, hard moment. She pulls her maple strands over one shoulder then tilts her head to the side and puckers her glossy lips as she does. A few seconds later, she glides her finger down her chest to her cleavage and plays with a necklace there, watching him closely. Her movements seem natural but also calculated.

A knowing grin slides across her pretty face. “You’re not into women.”

So that’s what she was doing.

Azure doesn’t even blink. “Why? Interested?” He holds her gaze, and, for someone who isn’t into women, he gives her the sexiest look known to man. A look worthy of sonnets and songs, and panty tosses. Right now, I want him—think I have a chance, even though I know it isn’t possible. God help the man he directs that seductive smolder to because…damn.

Harper’s cheeks blush, proving even she isn’t immune to Azure’s allure. “I do like a challenge, but only one I know I can win.” With that, her attention turns back to me. “Tell Nathan we need to talk and that it’s about something important.”

I would say tell him yourself, but I know he’s been ignoring her texts. He might have blocked her number. I don’t ask, because I’m not one of those girls. The way I see it, if a guy is going to cheat on you or dump you, he will. No amount of threats, ultimatums, or snooping will change that. Besides, no girl should want to be with a guy who doesn’t adore her.

“I’ll tell him,” I say with another shrug, my tone clear that I doubt it will matter.

She slides her Louis Vuitton bag onto her bent arm and takes a step away but pauses. “It’s important, Kensington. What I have to say will significantly affect his life. Make sure he gets the message.”

She saunters across the library, her steps light but her hips swinging. Male eyes wander in her direction as if she’s leaving a trail of pheromones.

It’s not until she’s at the exit doors that I stop staring and start breathing again. “What in the hell do you think she means by that?”

Azure shakes his head, his lips drawn in. “Could be nothing. Clearly, she likes to start stuff. Could also be something that’s important to her, given how self-absorbed she is, but not life-altering to Nathan.”

“Or…?” I shift in my chair, the seat hard as a rock all of a sudden.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t want to speculate. The girl is manipulative, that’s for sure. You can’t trust people like her. Based on what you’ve told me about Nathan, I’m surprised he got involved with her at all. She’s a lot of work. He had to have known that going in.”

I glance at the doors where she left. “I think it was her looks. She’s beautiful and very much his type with her curvy body.”

“Pfft.” He puffs. “You’rehis type. She was a filler for something. Maybe for you.” He leans back in his chair and studies his book. “Now, if you were coming to the Halloween festival, I could meet him in person and get a better reading on his character, feel him out for you.”

“I don’t know if I want you feeling on any part of him. You’re paranormal hot.”

“Paranormal hot.” He laughs. “Did you just make that up?”

“Maybe. Why?”

He shakes his head, a big smile on his pretty face. “Is it the skin?” He holds up his arm.

“Among other things. You speak different languages. You’ve lived all over. You have this whole calm, knowledgeable Carlisle Cullen vibe about you.”

“Are you Twilighting me?”

“Yep,” I say with no shame. The movie is practically a cult classic. “If I didn’t know for a fact your skin is warm, I’d totally believe you’re a vampire.”

“Except you’ve seen me in the sun.”

“You could be a mutated version that doesn’t sparkle.” I raise a brow. “How do you know this much aboutTwilight? Edward Cullen fan?”

“I read the books. I was curious. But I didn’t have a thing for Edward. Charlie Swan, on the other hand…”

My lip curls. “You’re kidding?”

“Completely.” A slow grin emerges on his face.

“Oh my gosh.” I slap the table. “I thought you were serious.”
