The hallway isn’t private enough for a conversation like this. I text her.
Will call in 5.
My feet move toward the exit doors as I send my reply.
A guy holds the door open for me.
“Thanks.” I glance up and catch my breath. My ex-boyfriend’s face and eyes stare back at me. My heart stops beating. Frozen in place, I blink until I realize it’s not him, just a guy with similar hair and coloring.
Phew.I exhale and continue down the sidewalk. The temperature is cool and nice. Sun filters through leafy tree branches, sprinkling light onto the lawn and concrete pathways that lead to other buildings on campus. An old oak centered in one of the grass areas seems like the most private place to call Mom.
I head for it.
“Hey.” Harper cuts off my path. “We need to talk.”
Huh?Where did she come from? “I can’t right now.” I step around her.
Again, she blocks the way. “Yeah, well, I have class in a few so now is all I have. This won’t take long.”
While I’m in jeans and a T-shirt, Harper looks ready for a fashion show. Black pants and heels are paired with a low-cut white blouse that shows her ample cleavage. The sheer material barely camouflages her black lace bra. Necklaces and bracelets finish the look. It’s stylish and sexy, like something Kendall Jenner would wear.
Even at my best, I couldn’t put together an outfit like that. No wonder Nathan likes her.
“What do you want?” I glower.
“Ew. You don’t have to be bitchy.”
“I’mthe bitchy one?” Either she’s a fan of reverse psychology or she’s mental.
Harper waves away my comment. “Nathan doesn’t need anyone messing with his life right now but since you’re hisfamily, maybe you could help him snap out of his rut.”
“Rut?”
“Yeah. You know how he is and how he likes to spend his time. Or maybe you don’t.” The smugness of her tone sets me off.
“I know Nathan. Probably better than you.”
She barks out a laugh. “Unless you’ve sat on his dick, I doubt that.”
“Okay.” I throw up my hands. “We’re done.”
“I’m teasing.” She grabs my arm.
I shake her off and scowl. “You have issues.”
“That’s funny coming from you, the girl invading her cousin’s life for—what was the reason again? Or does Nathan still not know? Poor guy giving up his house and privacy as a favor to his dad and no one will tell him why.”
My jaw tightens. God, this girl is ballsy. “My reasons are none of your business.”
“Or Nathan’s, clearly. But I’m not the one being inconvenienced. I’m sure he’s happy to help out without needing an explanation,” she mocks and juts her hip. “Look, I’m not here to argue.”
“Obviously.”
“I’m here to get you to help him in return for your intrusion into his life.”
“Wow!”
“If you know him as well as you say, then you know he likes to party and he loves sex, but only with me these days. I broke the player in him.” She brushes her hair behind her shoulder. “What you can do to help is suggest throwing a party at the house. Or just throw one. I’ll handle the deets and invites. Then he’ll remember what he’s missing. He just needs reminding.”
