“The money is in the hospitals. They keep themselves well protected,” Mac says.
“Right.” That makes sense. “I’m hung up on the first dead girl. There still isn’t anyone reported missing?”
“Not that would be in a Golden Prep uniform,” Damon remarks, making me think. I didn't get the best look at the girl's face, but I didn't recognize it.
"What if she was a new enrollee but then dropped out?"
"Oh, that's a good thought." Mac’s fingers start to fly across the keyboard. I got back to flipping through my notebook. Nix shows up in the meantime.
I fight a laugh when she talks a reluctant Naomi into letting her do her nails. Easy banter falls over the space. Eros, Damon, and Jax settle around a desk, talking. It's not long before Damon heads out to get food, and we all end up eating in front of the television as Nix carries on about the movie she has insisted we all must watch.
I'm starting to notice that while she's young, she bounces from person to person. It might seem as though she's pestering them, but really, she's checking on them, making them take a break.
It's interesting how they all fit together.
Jax reaches over, pulling me into his lap and placing a kiss on my neck. I can't help but wonder if I could fit for the first time in my life.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
JAX
Kinsley is supposed to be unpacking, but she’s staring at her phone, giggling. We spent the rest of the weekend at the Incognito warehouse, bouncing from one dead end to another.
Most of my cousins had shuffled in and out, and Kinsley had met everyone at this point. Between her settling in with everyone and her mom’s reaction to us at the hospital, it had been easy to get her to move more of her stuff here.
“Oh my God.” Kinsley bursts into laughter. I try not to glare at her phone. I won’t be jealous of my own family. I’m happy she’s fitting in, but I can be selfish with her attention. Not to mention, we have to go back to school tomorrow. There are still rumors floating around. I might have to knock them out of a few fuckers.
“What’s so funny?” I ask, tossing her favorite pillow onto the bed. I love seeing her stuff all over. It makes my room feel warmer. Our room.
No one batted an eye when I moved her in. If anything, Nix and Mom were excited and talking about redoing my whole room. Nix has tried before, but I wouldn't let her. I hadn’t seena point. Now Kinsley can do whatever she wants with the space. As long as her ass is in that bed each night, that’s all I care about.
“Nothing.” She immediately stops laughing. Yeah, Nix invited her to the group chat.
“You talking about the bunker?”
Kinsley’s brows rise a fraction, but she quickly drops them. “Bunker?” She pretends to be confused. Her acting is still terrible. “What are you talking about?” Those plump lips of hers press together, trying not to smile.
“If you say so.” I shake my head.
“I never know if Naomi is joking with her comments or serious. Which only makes it that much funnier.”
“I’m not sure we want to know.” I think my cousin might be a touch of a sociopath if you fall outside of her family.
Eros might be more stoic, but I think he’s all there upstairs. Some might not agree. Out of everyone, Eros spends the most time with Uncle Ronan. It’s been very clear from a young age the kind of role he wants in this family.
“I haven’t heard from Blair.” Kinsley puts her phone down.
“She’s home.”
“I know. Mac told me, but did she tell you she dug into Blair?”
“I’ve dug into Blair.” I’m not sure what she’s getting at.
“No.” Kinsley shakes her head. “She thinks something is up with her. About her past.”
“Her past?” What are they talking about? If I recall correctly, it’s pretty cookie-cutter.
“That it’s not adding up.”
