“That was intense.” I let out a nervous laugh because that shit is still lingering. I was just in a room with three of the scariest and most feared men in the city while discussing business. Me! A no one. This is all so surreal.
“You’ll get used to them.” I glance over at Jax. I’m not sure. They had been nice and were going to do some digging of their own.
War and Jax’s dad, Z, are going to reach out to the chief regarding the girl from the party because Jax and Damon were there. That won’t look too suspicious. I guess to feel him out.
“This is crazy. You know that. I’ve gone from a normal girl to mixed up with dead teens, and the chief of police may be in on it.”
“He’s likely in on a cut of profit.”
“Right,” I laugh again. “Because that’s just a logical thought process.” I puff out a breath. I do know that when you want tofigure out what is going on, you follow two things: the money and the love interest.
“You want out?” Jax asks. I turn slightly to face him, not liking the question in the least bit.
“I didn’t say that.” In fact, that’s the furthest thing I want. Right now, as scary as it is, I feel a part of something. Even with the newspaper, it hadn’t felt that way.
“Good, because you’re not a normal girl. I’ve always known that.” He lifts my hand, kissing the back of it.
“Jax.” I want to crawl over into his lap, but he’s driving.
I’m still finding it hard to believe what he feels for me is real. I know it’s part of my own insecurities. When the two people who are supposed to love and adore you the most barely give you the time of day, it makes you wonder if something is wrong with you.
“I know. I’ve turned into a sap just like my father.” I snort a laugh. Yeah, all these men are marshmallows when it comes to the women in their lives.
It goes to show you that you can still be a badass and not a dick. A true badass would never care if you saw them give affection and love to their wife. They don’t give a shit what you think and would tell you to go fuck yourself.
“While I might still be a tiny bit scared of your family, I do rather enjoy them. Your house is always so busy and buzzing with life.” How a family home should be.
“You want a big family?” The idea makes my stomach dip with a flutter of excitement.
“Thought you weren’t trying to scare me?” I tease him, not sure how to answer that question. “You?” I ask.
“Whenever you’re ready.” He says it without missing a beat.
“Oh my God.” I smack his shoulder with my hand. “We’ve been dating for five seconds.”
“To you, not me. That’s why I saidwhen you’re ready.”
“Why did you wait?” I know we have been over it a bit, but I still want to hear it.
“You were new to the city, and I’m sure it didn’t take long for you to hear my last name and what it meant.”
“This is true.” It wasn’t only that. Both Jax and his brother Damon have this presence around them. It’s not arrogance or being cocky. While it might be intimidating, you also know that in that room, they could either hurt you or protect you. You’ll run to them or away.
“And you only knowsomethings. Depending on how deeply you want to be involved in the family dealings changes things, such as your extracurricular activities.”
“You’re not talking football.”
“Football is nothing compared to some of the things I’ve been taught. Football and school are more about blending into life and having an understanding of different responsibilities.” Wow, but that’s not surprising.
“I’m guessing those extracurricular activities weren’t playing the piano or learning Spanish.”
“Not Spanish. Parlo italiano. Tu sei la mia bellezza.”
“You speak Italian, and I’m your beauty,” I answer.
“Tu parli italiano?”
“I speak a little. Only because of Mary. I was trying to pick it up to surprise her one day, but I know a handful of languages. That was the extracurricular I had to do.” My parents aren’t into the sports thing. It's one thing I actually have in common with them.
