I tightened my hold on her waist and gave her a little shake. “Someone’s just messing around.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right.” She looked down at me and smiled. “Well, that killed the mood.”
“The rocks and sticks in my back aren’t helping things either.” Palming her ass, I gave it a quick squeeze. “Mind helping me up?”
Sarah giggled and awkwardly stood, holding out a hand. Hoisting me up with a little grunt, she kept hold of me. “We should head back.”
I gave her a quick once-over and bit my lip. “Let me—” I said, adjusting her bikini top.
“Oh, yeah,” she said, pulling up her bottoms. “I was about to give everyone a show. I might be alittledrunker than I realized.”
“Why don’t we get our stuff and head out?”
Her smile dimmed, and she took a step back. “Sure. That sounds fine.”
Shaking my head, I caught her hand. “I’m done sharing you tonight.”
Sarah bit her lip, her posture softening as she nodded. “Okay. Let’s make this fast.”
We found our way back to the fire pit and quickly gathered our things. Kat and Mona pulled Sarah aside for a quick chat while I said my goodbyes, then we made the short walk to the car.
“I could carry something.” Sarah dipped her chin at her cooler and beach bag in my hands.
“You could, but I’m here.” I lifted them up with a wink.
She rolled her eyes, her lips twitching as she fought back a smile. Twisting her hair on top of her head, she asked, “So where do you want to go?”
I popped the trunk and put Sarah’s cooler and bag inside. “You’ll see.” Opening her door, I waited until she was settled, then ran to the driver’s side. I only had a few minutes to come up with the perfect way to end the night.
Her place?
No. Too presumptuous.
Train bridge?
Nah, Sarah doesn’t have a change of clothes.
My place?
Boring, but it does have snacks.
Where the fuck do you take your dream girl that’s both casual and special?
I put on my seatbelt and put the key in the ignition.
“We could go to your place,” Sarah said, staring at her hands. “I mean, I’d have to borrow some clothes, but?—”
“If you’re sure.”
She turned to me with a shy smile and nodded. “I am.”
“Great.” I tore my eyes away, afraid I would finish what we started in the woods. She deserved better than our first time being in the Lincoln.
Flicking on the headlights, it took a moment for my brain to make sense of what I was seeing.
A guy in jeans and a black hoodie stood with his back to us. Strung up on a tree in front of him was a woman. My stomach dropped when I recognized her.
Hailey.
