Turned my darkness into light.
Now the world keeps on turning, but my soul is singing?—
You gave me something to believe in.
* * *
Now I don’t need signs or reasons,
I just need your hand in mine.
You gave me something to believe in?—
For all time.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she stared at Axel. He hadn't moved a muscle since she'd started reading him her words.
The trail of a silvery tear trickled down his cheek. He swallowed several times, his Adam's apple the only part of his body moving.
Her stomach twisted as if she were on trial, waiting for the jury to convict her or set her free. Twisting to set her notebook on the little table, she slowly turned at the creak of his chair. He scooped her up in his muscular arms and held her tightly. Her arms wrapped around his shoulders; her cheek rested against his, her legs wrapped around his waist.
"Mads, that is simply beautiful."
"It's about us."
"I know." He sniffed.
"I don't have music for it."
"Between all of us, you'll have music."
"I'd like us to write it together."
He squeezed her tighter. Her heart pounded in her chest. After a long pause, he said, "I can hear it in my head. Let's write it."
Chapter Thirty-Seven
Kissing her lips made his heart flutter. It almost felt unmanly to say it, but his heart responded to her. Setting her feet on the floor, he turned and picked up his guitar and played what he heard in his head. After playing the first chorus, she began singing with him. Changing a note here and there, he'd start again. They'd clean it up and replay it until they felt it was perfect.
They'd been in the office for hours polishing the song. Then he said, "Let's record it on my phone and send it to Jami and Sean."
They had a hit on their hands. He was biased, of course, but he also knew a great song when he heard it.
Setting his phone on a stand in front of him, he tapped record and nodded to Mads. He strummed the first chords, and then she began singing her song. Their song.
Looking into her eyes as she sang the haunting song that was their story, his body reacted. Chills ran the length of his body during the chorus. His fingers shook as she turned up the volume and then lowered it during the bridge. A shiver ran down his back as they ended the song.
Tapping the stop button to end the recording, he glanced at her and nodded. "People will be singing this song for years to come."
"I think so too."
"Let's listen to it now, then I'll send it."
Holding his arms out to her, he settled her onto his lap. Tapping the play icon, they sat in silence as they listened to the beautiful love song. A song he'd never get out of his head.
He stopped it when she sang the last note. "It's fucking unbelievable. Are you good with my sending it on to Jami and Sean?"
"I am."
