I grit my teeth, ignoring the voices in my head that I cannot explain. Walking to the front door, I glance over my shoulder.
“See you guys later, love you,” I yell as I leave the house and head back to school. I really need to ask my parents for a car. Depending on Quinn for a ride was one thing, but now that she’s gone, I think it’s time to get one of my own.
My phone vibrates in my pocket, and I take it out.Shit!
Jer:
Football game at the high school? I didn’t take you for the school-spirit type of girl.
Jer:
I’m not sure how I feel about this little revelation. You never ever showed interest. You and Quinn never went to any games. Why now?
Jer:
Which boy is it?
Jer:
Sky, answer me.
Taking a deep breath, I need to diffuse the situation. He sounds mad, and I don’t want his attitude to sour my mood.
Me:
It’s for an assignment. If I don’t go. I fail.
Not a total lie, I have to do it for a class next semester, but he doesn’t need to know that. My phone vibrates in my hand, and I brace myself for his response.
Jer:
Old Neuman still doing that shit?
I blow out the breath I was holding, thanking God he’s not mad.
Me:
Yep, and it’s stupid. He’s a math teacher. Why does he care so much about the football team?
Jer:
That’s because he was injured playing college ball. Came home and became one of the assistant coaches. After that, he finished with a math degree and has been assigning that shit ever since.
Me:
Makes sense. So I’m heading there now. Maybe if I get out of there early enough, I’ll get to see you.
Jer:
Text me when you’re done. Be a good girl, Sky.
Me:
I will, Jer. Talk later.
Shutting off the screen, I slide my phone into my pocket and realize I’m at the school. The parking lot is already packed with cars and people walking towards the field. I arrive at the gate, show my ID, and head for the bleachers. The atmosphere is electric; everyone’s in high spirits and filled with excitement for the game tonight. I find my seat in the bottom row and feel eyes on me. I look around and see a few girls with snarls on their faces. I roll my eyes and watch the field as the team comes out. Spotting Vaughn, he looks in the crowd and finally spots me. He winks, making me blush as he waves. I give him a little wave back as my heart beats a mile a minute in my chest. I can’t believe I’m here, wearing Vaughn's jersey, and he acknowledged me in front of all these people, despite the whispers of how and why I smile as I watch him warm up. The cheerleading squad comes out and does the same and my eyes collide with Clara’s and I smirk. She narrows hers at me and I flip her the bird. Fuck her and her friends. If Vaughn wants me here wearing his jersey, then fuck them bitches and anyone else that has a problem with it.
A few hours later, the game ended, and we won. During halftime, Vaughn came into the stands and kissed me in front of everyone, which only seemed to piss Clara off further. He told me to wait by his car after the game, so here I am standing next to his lifted Chevy truck as the parking lot starts to empty. I take out my phone, looking at the time, and see if I have any missed texts from Jer, which I don’t, thank god. As much as I want to see him, I also want to see where the night takes me with Vaughn. A smile spreads across my face as I think about the kiss during halftime, but then I hear someone approaching, and my phone is slapped out of my hand.
