"You have amazing tits." His declaration wasn't cute or complimentary. It was blatant and creepy.

I blinked at him. We went from professorial to base asshole in a few seconds?

My phone dinged. Normally, I'd ignore it on a first date, but I was dying. I needed an out.

Seth?

My heart pounded as I stared at Seth's text. Deep in my stomach I missed him so much. I texted him back to wish him a happy Turkey Day too.

Moments later a new text popped up.

NOSH

So…you ARE still communicating with the sheriff.

Stick to simple hookups like that office robot, Vijay.

How did he get this phone's number? How did he know I was out with Vijay? A sense of being watched had me glancing around.

I cleared my throat as the need to run clouded my head. I wanted to go home and sit in the closet with one of the dogs.

I dug in my purse for money to pay for my half and threw it on the table. "Family emergency. Sorry."

Before I could rise, Vijay locked my wrist to the table. "No, you're not going to ditch. I'm paying. You're at least going to suck me off in the car before I drive you home."

"Let. Go. If you don't, I'll make a scene so loud they'll call the police on you, and I'll file for assault."

"Bitch." He released me.

I didn't waste time arguing before I left.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

JOLEY

A week later, all three of us crowded around the TV watching Amber and Ian live at her veterinary emergency clinic being interviewed on the morning show. The two of them had something special. I hadn't seen Amber behave this way about a man in… well, never. She was over the moon about him even if they seemed to fight a lot. The morning show kept trying to press for unreleased details of their romance. Suddenly, Amber got called away to deal with a patient emergency.

"Come on, camera person, follow her," Bruno said as he leaned forward on the sofa. "This is like getting a live, uncut, secret episode of the reality show."

What usually aired on a TV show lagged behind reality by weeks. The reality show added music and editing to scenes to ramp up the drama. Amber said a lot of what ended up on TV was so edited that it barely resembled the truth. So far, they'd edited Amber and Ian into one hot, illicit affair.

"Oh, no," I whispered. "Someone's messing with one of Amber's patients?" Nothing could drive my sister into wildness more than someone screwing around with one of her patients.

I watched in horror as Amber argued with her nemesis doctor, an old timer who did different medicine than her. According to Amber, he might be a snake charmer with people, but this older vet sucked at actual medicine, often to the point he put the pet at risk. Nothing irritated Amber more than a patient in danger.

Bruno shot to his feet. "He pushed her. He fucking touched her. I'm going to kill him."

"Ian's taking care of that for you." Heart pounding, I couldn't stop watching the train wreck. My body felt paralyzed with terror that Amber might get taken away from me. I was equally worried about Ian, who took a solid hit in the head when the two men smashed into a bank of dog cages.

Someone yanked Ian away from the older vet. Someone in a sheriff's uniform. It was…

What the hell was Seth doing at the clinic?

I shot to my feet.

His was the voice of calm during a hurricane. The show cut off with an apology that filming ended.

Did Amber go in for an attack again? Did the older vet hurt her? What happened to Seth?
