"Why're you all dressed up?" Amber asked from the doorway.
I watched her approach from the bathroom mirror while I put on mascara. I hated sneaking around and not telling her the truth. "Got a date."
"Looks like a high class, special date. Where are you going?"
I swallowed and spoke quietly, "A wedding."
"I didn't know one of your friends was getting hitched. Who?"
"I'm just the date. Not sure who's tying the knot."
"Joley…" Amber's lips pressed into a tight grimace. She briefly covered her face with a hand. "Tell me it's not that sheriff."
I didn't reply as I retouched my lipstick.
"Say it's not him." Now she had her hands on her hips.
I stayed silent which was answer enough.
"He's a nice guy, but this isn't smart," Amber warned. "You said you would end this. That you two were just friends."
"Wearejust friends. I haven't slept with him, if you can believe it."
"That won't keep Nosh from noticing. Or thinking you are sleeping with him."
"He won't find out. The event isn't in town. It's probably all cops and deputies. No press."
"I'm sure he has cops in every department on his payroll. How else does he know everything all the time?"
"It's not like me being someone's random date is going to hit the radar of some cop guy who reports to Nosh."
"Unless Nosh specifically askswhowent with Seth Briscoe."
