"Do you love him?"

No use lying. "Yeah. I do."

"Fight for whatyouwant. If he can’t remember you, then remind him who you are, because you’re his mate. I was inside that annoying brain of his for a long time. No matter how much he tried to ignore it and do what he considered right, Shane wanted to kill every male who looked at you. That kind of primitive territoriality comes from you being the one his heart chose. To him, you’re his one and only. That kind of thing doesn’t go away."

"Maybe." She stared out at the lake, reliving the hurt of what had felt like rejection.

"If you feel half of what he felt for you before the curse was lifted, then neither of you will be whole without the other."

She picked up the demon cat and scratched its head. "Thank you. I should try to stop running from my feelings. The problem is anyone I care about dies."

"I’m right." It lifted its chin. "I know him better than anyone on the planet. Ask me anything."

"Lord, help me."

"Here’s a silly tidbit about Shane. Did you know he’s addicted to licorice? Not the black ones but the cherry? He’s got no grounds to ride Flynn about his candy addiction."

"I didn’t know that. He’s got a sweet tooth?"

"If you only knew. Cherry licorice is only the beginning. Then there are Skittles. Come on, let’s go find him." The cat’s head whipped around to stare at the water.

A chill settled down her arms. "Something’s coming."

"I feel it too."

"It’s coming in fast."

Chapter Thirty

Shane came fullyawake and leapt out of bed, taking the comforter and several pillows with him. Bright moonlight streamed through the windows, but he was in high alert, protective mode.Something is coming for her.

Yet how could something be coming to get Madeline when she was dead? Her soul could be in danger.

He doubled over, grabbing his head, desperate to resolve the blinding pain piercing his skull.

"Sit before you fall down," Roman ordered as he took his arm and directed him to a chair.

Rubbing his hair, Shane stayed hunched over long after the throbbing inside his head subsided into the background.

"Baku?"He thought to himself."You still in there?"

No sarcastic quip. No sense of another being.

Nothing but the blank static of his own thoughts echoed back.

No longer did he detect the constant push of the demon fighting for control. Finally, alone with his own thoughts.

This was good.

Why did he feel lonely without the annoying demon and his continuous dialogue? Baku’s absence felt like a best friend had died. Yet they hadn’t been true friends, or had they?

Madeline gone. The demon gone.

He was alone. Utterly alone.

"Hey," Roman said gently.

He glanced up to find his big brother kneeling in front of him. He did have his brothers. That was something.
