"Let me go or I’ll…"
"You’ll what?" Her eyebrows shot upward.
"I should kill you for what you’ve done to us."
She smiled. Flipping smiled without an ounce of fear. Faint lines creased the edges around her eyes. "Oh, Shane." Her tone caused his stomach to clench. "You lovely, honorable lycan. You’re not here to kill me." She held up her bracelet and wiggled it. "Only lights up when those who mean to murder me are close."
"It’s lit up now."
"It wasn’t when we met at the bar." Her face softened to grant him a hot look that sent chills straight to his balls. Her fingers worked down his chest to brush over a nipple. His body bowed off the bed into her touch, eliciting a soft, surprised "oh" from her.
"Do you really plan to hurt me now?"
"I planned to be nice when I found you and wanted toaskyou for advice on this thing in my head and to free us from the curse."
"What’s inside your head?" She leaned away from him. Her eyes had gone wide.
"A demon. No has been able to exorcise it."
Now she looked a little shocked, panicked even. She squinted as if expecting to glimpse the beast. "There’s ademoninside you?"
"Yes."
"Did it make you fake your death? It never made sense why you'd ditch your brothers."
"The demon makes me useless and puts them at risk. I must get rid of it before I go back to them."
He wanted to be with Roman, Flynn, and Ky, fighting side-by-side and living their mantra:Fight hard. Fight right. Fight to the end.Instead, he’d fled before fighting to the end. He planned to rectify this badge of dishonor as soon as he was no longer a liability.
She lifted her hand and held it close to his forehead, but not touching. He stared at the dragon tattoo on the inside of her wrist.
"She's the dragon healer. Holy fuck,"Baku said in an awed tone Shane had never heard before.
"Can you please not curse? I've asked you before. What does that mean?"
"There's only one in existence at a time. I've never met this one. Get her to touch us again. Get her to try to reach me. I want to feel her energy."The pleading, almost yearning in the demon's tone spooked Shane more than its evil cackling, teasing, or cajoling.
Protective instinct slid into place. He could not allow her to try to reach the beast inside him. He craned away from her hand. "Don't try to connect with it."
"Why do you think it hasn't fully possessed you?" She yanked her hand away from his forehead.
"I think it's my unwavering belief in God that holds it at bay."
"As in the Christian god?"
"Yes. I've worked with his angels."There's a living angel tattoo on my back that watches me. I think it protects me."I think my faith has kept the demon at bay. The whole heaven and hell, angels and demons dichotomy."
"That's for humans, not creatures like us," she said distractedly. She scooted back. but not off him, to stare out the window as if sensing something. A shiver passed through her. Whatever was out there had to be terrifying to scare someone as powerful as she. "I might be able to help you with the demon." She glanced down at him. "Not now. Not today. I have to think about how."
That easy? She’d help him?
"Who’s out there? Why are you afraid?" Why didn’t he detect the threat? He usually sensed magic. Unless her pursuers were human.
He whacked his bound hands against the bedframe to get her attention. "What’s going on?"
With a wave at the window she said, "It's a department of MI6 dedicated to killing me. They're always out there. Always chasing me. To these guys, you need to stay dead so they don't report to the monarch you live. They most definitely can’t see both of us together. All is not as it seems." She made a distressed sound and massaged her wrist again. "I'll lead them away from here. Away from you."
She did this protect him? He understood nothing about this witch.
