Shane’s irises blacked over. "I can kill all of them."

She put a hand on Shane’s chest. "I need Shane right now, not you, demon. We all do."

"They don’t deserve your help. They can go fuck themselves," Shane said. But not as Shane. The wide-eyed, frozen stares from all three brothers confirmed they’d never heard him speak as the demon. Probably rarely, if ever, heard him use the f-word.

"Stop this," she pleaded.

"I thought Shane took care of the demon," Roman said. "I didn’t realize it’s still…"

Shane shook his head. His eyes returned to their bright blue. He stumbled and gripped the table for balance.

"Thank you," she whispered. Louder she said, "I need a soda. Anything high sugar." No one moved. "Now, please."

Shane kept both hands on the table and his head low.

Two bottles of soda appeared. She thrust one between his arms. "Drink."

He didn’t move to obey right away. She jiggled the drink in his face until he took it.

"She tames the demon?" Flynn whispered as Shane chugged the soda. "Serious devilry, that."

"Let’s sit and be calm about all of this." Roman waved to the rectangular dining table.

"Weapons on the sofa over there." Shane pointed toward a white sofa. "Hands remain on the table at all times."

"We’re on the same team," Flynn said.

"Not feeling it. Things are not as they seem when it comes to Madeline," Shane said.

"Apparently not," Roman said in a disgusted tone.

"I don’t trust her." The redhead named Nova crossed her hands. "How do we know she isn’t in collusion with the demon inside Shane? How do we know that she hasn’t cast some sort of spell on Shane?"

"Nova…" Roman said.

"She has no idea what she did to you." Nova put her hand on Roman’s forearm as she sat next to him. "She doesn’t know what you go through every single day with that curse band on your wrist. That it’s almost killed you more than once in punishment."

Shane growled.

Madeline got a flash of his irises blacking over.

Not good.

Madeline grabbed a salt container off the table, twisted off the top, and sprinkled it in a line down the rectangular table as a temporary fence. "It’s time you stop this behavior. By my will you shall cease. Check in place until you find peace."

The crystal burned against the skin of her chest as it helped her focus her magic into enacting the freeze spell.

Will it work?Breath held, she watched Shane.

Shane froze in place but glared a type of evil hatred that promised revenge, something clearly not coming from Shane.

Wow. It worked! I need the vampire.

"Flynn," Madeline said in the calmest tone she could. "Call Antonio. Do it right now and hand me the phone. I need to speak to the vampire. We’re losing Shane."

Flynn didn’t move.

"Now! I can’t hold him for very long like this. I need the vampire to help all of us get this demon under control and get Shane back."
