He glanced up through his long lashes, his mouth a wicked smile. A real smile. His fingers and palms were rough against my skin as he bent his head again.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” he breathed out. The warm rush of air was a caress against me.

“Then don’t stop.” I wasn’t embarrassed or shy about this. Or about myself in front of him.

He licked into me, licked into my secrets and ate away my inhibitions. “You’re perfect here. I’m going to make you forget anyone who’s tasted you before.”

The possessiveness of his words slid into the places lurking beneath my defenses where I never wanted to admit I wanted to need someone in this way. I could barely breathe. Barely form words. “Okay.”

He set a rhythm with his mouth and then added a finger. My muscles clenched. I felt my body thrashing out of control. I might’ve even clawed his hair and mumbled incomprehensible words. Men had touched me here, even kissed me to the point of orgasm, but not like this. It’d never felt like this. Bits of me got swept into the gathering storm.

“Oh my God.” I’d had orgasms before from my own hand or others but this one made my body go numb. I couldn’t move.

“That was okay?” he asked.

“Uh, yeah,” I laughed out. “I feel like that was something we should’ve done back in vet school.”

He chuckled and nodded. “Yeah, probably. I guess we need to make up for lost time, huh?”

“Did you want to do that in vet school?”

He rubbed his thumb over my bottom lip, his eyes intent on my mouth. “Every fucking time you lit into me.”

His phone rang.

“Ignore it.” I hated my begging tone, but I didn’t want this moment to end. I dreaded whatever ugliness would come of more time with his family.

He buried his face in my neck. “The car is waiting for us downstairs.”

“Let it wait.”

“I want to do that, but it’s better to get this over with and be done with it.” He kissed up to my lips, where he placed one last kiss. “We’re not done. Simply pushing the pause button.”

Dinner with Ian’s parents turned out to be a formal event set at a monster table in a room worthy of a palace. The crystal chandelier completed the atmosphere. The table could easily seat over twenty, but tonight it’d been set for a fraction of that. Fortunately, it was only the immediate family. And Maya. Shouldn’t have been surprised little Miss Blonde and Perfect-Future-Wife would be there. I’d give his mother credit for her tenacity. But what man in his right mind would consider marrying a woman who willingly slept with his brother?

I leaned in to whisper to Ian before we sat down. “Does your mother know about Maya and your brother?”

He held up his hand to hide his whispered reply. “I don’t know. Probably wouldn’t matter to her.”

We made it through the first course and a lot of annoying polite chitchat. I stared at the spoon-sized portion of salmon on my otherwise empty plate. Where was the actual food? Tapas might be an interesting restaurant experience, but not something I expected at a family dinner.

As a waiter set down a salad with pears and blue cheese for the second course, I wiggled to get comfortable in the dress Nabi designed. It had ribbing up the side that dug in near my boobs. I liked the dark red color but knew my haphazard hair didn’t give the outfit the elegance it deserved.

Mrs. Todd helped Maya’s telling of a story about a charity event a few months back in honor of juveniles recently released from detention working to get their lives on track. Mostly, the story was about who donated the most at the silent auction, not the kids. Internal eye roll. If they wanted to help, they’d design work programs or training courses for the struggling kids, or pay for them to complete their schooling.

“So you have a bit of a record yourself, don’t you, Amber?” Mrs. Todd asked.

What?

“Mom, really?” Ian asked. “You had her investigated?”

Did that imply either Ian knew about that incident or that he wasn’t even questioning that I had a potential record?

I didn’t speak since obviously Victoria Todd had a lot more to say.
