She sat up quickly. “When?”

“I came to The Palms to do an animal show. Grandpa brought Leo and Amelia, and Horace came with Cameron. They sat at opposite ends of the room, and I didn’t even catch them glaring at each other. So there’s hope, right?”

“There’ssomething,” she said, sounding skeptical. “Though I’m not convinced it’s hope.”

“Maybe having Cameron and Leo and Amelia there made them soften.”

“Perhaps.” Nonna waved her hands in front of her. “I’ll worry about that later. For now, I think you should consider asking Julia to go to the Watermelon Gala with you.”

Logan had never been to the Watermelon Gala, though he’d always heard good things about it. Diamond Cove put it on every year, in partnership with The Palms, and it was an elegant night on the beach with all types of watermelon-flavored food. He imagined himself there with Julia, sitting at one of the tables, sipping sparkling watermelon water while a cool breeze lazily lifted the tendrils of her hair around her face.

But then he saw his grandpa and hers coming to blows at the next table over, ruining the night for everyone.

“I don’t know.”

“What’s not to know? Do you want to go with her or not?”

“Of course I do.” More than anything, he wanted to find a way to spend more time with Julia. “But she’s worried about upsetting her grandpa. And I don’t want to put her in a weird position.”

“Logan. Julia is a grown woman, and that means she can make her own decisions. Don’t decide for her that she can’t go to the gala with you.”

Well, when Nonna put it that way…

“I’ll think about it.”

She harrumphed, but she had a smile on her face, and they both knew he wouldn’t be able to resist asking her on a real date.

CHAPTER THIRTY

Julia

Juliasatinhercar in front of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Cameron had run inside the moment she’d put the car into park, but she wanted to read the text she’d received from Logan.

She hadn’t had a chance to speak to him since the animal show. Since it was Tuesday, she and Cameron had gone to the conservation center earlier, but Kai had come out and told them that Raza was acting up, and Logan didn’t feel like he could safely leave him to one of the other keepers.

Logan:Sorry I missed seeing you today.

Logan:And Cameron too. It’s a highlight of my week.

Julia smiled at his inclusion of her brother. It was a highlight of Cameron’s week, and had quickly become one of her own.

Julia:Kai told us about Raza. How’s he doing?

Logan:A little better, but it’s going to be a late night for me.

Julia:What’s going on with him?

Logan:I’m not sure. He seemed to be getting better, then he got very aggressive today. I gave him some supplements to calm him down enough to get his vitals and more blood work. And we’re collecting stool specimens as well, so I’m curious what those results tell us.

Logan:…let’s pretend I didn’t mention stool at all.

Julia:I work with 7 year olds, which means all forms of the word stool are a part of my regular conversation.

Logan:Glad I can fit in with the second-grade crowd. #lifegoals
