My father had already sat down when I walked into the formal dining room. And unlike Duke had said, there was not only plenty to eat, but my father had someone setting the table for me. Bea, Father’s wife, was now here to be seen for which I was grateful
“Why are you here?” My father didn’t even pretend with any niceties.
“I came to eat dinner and to get some answers. I need to know why you are so into me getting married to this guy. What makes him so fucking special? And can’t you just do your usual thing if you want his family’s company? Why include me?”
I had to remind myself that my father couldn’t know that I knew who Heston was. If he found out that I not only knew who he was, but had gotten naked with him and planned to do it again and again for the rest of our lives, who knew how badly it could backfire?
“You have all the answers you need.” He scowled at Duke, probably for letting me in, and Duke took his seat. I’d have felt bad, except Duke wasn’t what anyone would call a good brother to me. Let him take the brunt of my father’s ire for a minute or two.
“Why did you take a ride share?” Roy came in, his wolf close to the surface. “Explain that one.”
“Because I felt like it.” Asshat.
He kept going on about the car and why he’d been contacted about it. I ignored him, my eyes fixed on my father, trying to figure out what I could say to him that would get me even a morsel of an answer.
“Enough, Roy.” And my father either had enough of his shit or was sick of me staring at him. I didn’t care which if it got Roy to shut his pie hole.
“Enjoy your dinner and then our guest can be on his way.”
“I won’t go without answers. I want to know about the guy I’m marrying.”
“He is an omega and doesn’t have a criminal record. That’s all you need to know.”
That was hardly all I needed, but the more I asked, the less my father said. I was only making him mad, with no beneficial side effects. It was time to call uncle, finish my meal and head on my way to regroup.
“The roast is delicious.” It was, but that had everything to do with who cooked it and nothing to do with my father.
“Have you decided to stop this nonsense or are you trying to pacify me so you can get mouthy again?”
“The second,” Roy scowled. “He’s in this position for a reason.”
Biting my tongue took every single ounce of restraint that I had within me and by the time I walked out of the house and toward my rideshare, my wolf was so close to the surface, I could scent him. Please don’t let my father have the satisfaction of scenting my beast as well.
“I have a change of address.” I told him when I climbed in. “Do I need to do it on the app?”
“Yeah, and if it’s farther away, I’d appreciate a tip that shows your gratitude.”
Had my need to shift been less, I’d have told him to cut the crap, but if he didn’t get me to the woods fast, he was going to have a car full of wolf.
“Got it.”
Tonight was apparently an evening of accepting bullshit.
Chapter 19
Something’s wrong!
Heston
I hadn’t lied to Dad when I told him I was picking up something from the café.
That was true. I did. But afterward, I did a detour to my father’s home, now Sebastian’s pride and joy. There was no need to worry about Dad having a fall or needing to go to the hospital while I was gone, because Devyn was with him. Dad had introduced him to telenovelas and my husband-to-be was now invested in finding out what happened each day.
I had an ulterior motive for talking to Sebastian. He thought I was coming over to finalize the details about where and when the marriage would take place. But I was going to ferret out information about why he’d entered this agreement.
When I pulled up, there was no assistant manning the intercom and refusing to open the gates. Sebastian buzzed me in and I parked and went inside as the front door was ajar. That was a little odd. It was Sunday and my step-father’s assistant had the day off, but there was usually at least one domestic helper working the shift nobody wanted.
“I’m in the den.”
