“Heston.” He corrected and looked up.

“Devyn.”

He took a tiny step closer. Progress.

“My step-father, Sebastian, arranged a marriage for me. He told me the family, but not the name of my intended.”

Oh my gods. “Heston, itisyou. My family isn’t exactly what you call good people.” Or people at all, but that was a different matter altogether. “They had a plan for me and that plan didn’t include me finding someone I wanted to be with. Power is their goal and I am a pawn. They don’t give a shit about me.”

It was a long speech and I hoped he took it all in.

“So you really are supposed to marry me and I promise you the car is not stolen.”

“We both held back, fearing the truth might hurt us more.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “That’s not the way to start a marriage.”

“Does that mean youaregoing to marry me?”

Mine. Claim. Now.

My wolf needed to pipe the fuck down. We still hadn’t gotten to the part where I could turn furry, walk on four paws, howl at the moon, and catch dinner with my teeth. That would have to wait. There was so much to wade through before we got to that.

“You really didn’t steal the car? And your brother hasn’t alerted the police?”

We were going to be fifty, and he was still going to be asking me that.

“I really didn’t steal the car.” He took another step forward.

I held open my arms, hoping that enough had been said. He looked like he was about to come my way, when his friend called him.

“Sorry,” he mumbled and took off toward him. The same friend who was kissing the hood of my car. Kissing. It.

Who did that?

Had it been any other time, I’d have run over there and told him to cut it out. For all I knew, he used that lip plumping serum and was getting that chemical shitstorm all over the wax. But things were in a big enough mess without me adding “was a dick to my bestie” to the list.

Instead, I stayed where I was, watching from a distance. Could it really be as easy as this? That I met my mate, and we were going to do the human marriage thing and all would be right in the world?

His friend walked away, and Heston headed back in my direction. It looked like I was about to find out.

Chapter 17

What’s going on?

Heston

“I need to get home.” I took Devyn’s hand. “Unless you have somewhere to be, come with me, please.” I didn’t want to let him out of my sight again, fearing he’d disappear.

“There’s nowhere I want to be except by your side.” He brought my hand to his cheek and brushed it against his skin before kissing it.

“There’s just one problem.”

His face crumpled. “Whatever it is, we can make it right. I promise, Hess. Heston,” he corrected himself.

A giggle slipped out, and he raised a brow. “Actually, make that two,” I said. I jerked my head toward his car where Dean was regaling everyone about the vehicle and his very good friend who owned it.

“They may want autographs and if you want a friend for life, tell Dean you’ll take him for a ride.” Dean wanted to drive the car, not be a passenger, but that wasn’t my decision to make.

“Not a problem, but does it have to be today? I kinda want to get out of here.”
