He his hands looped around my back.

The kiss was simple, but everything I could have asked for. I pulled back. “I’m grateful I don’t have anyone either, and I’m grateful you actually know about me and you still like me.”

Then his hands were on my hips and his lips were back on mine. I felt the strength of this man and his intensity, and I wrapped my hands around his neck, pulling him closer.

He deepened the kiss, and I felt lost, complete, so many things.

I pulled back and couldn’t help but smile at him. “You found me. You found me in so many ways. You found me trembling on the side of the road. I’m not going to lie and say that this has all been easy, but you found me in other ways too, and that doesn’t mean you’reobligatedto have me.”

He let out a light growl. “Well, I do think I started wanting a relationship with you when you told me I wasresponsiblefor you.”

I laughed. “I guess I didn’t give you a choice, did I?”

He kissed me again and held me tighter. “I’m glad you didn’t.”

“It’s nice to be in your arms and kiss you and know that this is okay.”

He smiled against my lips. “You’re telling me.”

I laughed, and then he laughed, and I wondered if this moment could go on forever. I wanted it to.

He held me tightly for a second, then pulled back. “Let’s go to bed and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

I felt a little scared about tomorrow. Still, I did trust him. “Sounds good.”

We walked down the hallway.

I hesitated. “Wait a sec.”

“Yeah?”

“Will you read me a Bible story?”

He laughed and pulled me in for another hug. “I thought you’d never ask.”

Chapter 31

McCrae

My phone buzzed, jolting me out of sleep. I noted it was barely seven o’clock in the morning. Normally, I was up and going for a run at this time of day, but I’d read Azalea stories for longer than usual, and then I’d held her while she’d fallen asleep.

“Hello?” I asked, answering Damon’s call.

“So I’m just pulling into the station, and I got a call that said the FBI people will be here about nine a.m. Do you guys want to come to the station?”

I stood and tried to clear my head. “Of course. That’s great.”

“Maybe they have more news, or maybe they can help us figure out what we really need to do to have some protection around here.”

I pulled on a T-shirt. “Okay, I’ll see you at nine.”

We hung up, and then I smelled it: breakfast and coffee.

Excitement pulsed through me, and I walked out of the bedroom and padded down the hallway.

In the kitchen, I found the most amazing sight; this woman in her pajamas, making me eggs. She already had place settings out for us.

“And you made pancakes?” I asked in disbelief.
