McCrae

I walked into the hospital with Sky at my side. It was strange, because I’d been thinking about what she’d said all night. She was scared to remember, but she had to—this couldn’t go on forever.

We checked in at the front desk, where a middle-aged woman with kind eyes gave us a sympathetic smile. The waiting area was sparse—just a few uncomfortable chairs and outdated magazines scattered across end tables.

Soon they called us back. Even though Dr. Chavez was an ER doctor, he was also a regular doctor, since Refuge Falls was so small. The small space felt even smaller with the three of us inside, the paper-covered exam table crinkling as Sky shifted her weight.

Dr. Chavez grinned as he walked into the room. “How’s my favorite patient?”

“I’m okay.” Lightly, she tapped her head.

Dr. Chavez didn’t waste any time. He put his tablet down on the counter and started inspecting where the bandage had been. I was happy to notice that the gash was healing.

“We’re going to leave the stitches another two days, maybe longer.” Dr. Chavez moved away from her and turned to me. “McCrae, would you mind going out into the hallway?”

I nodded.

“I’m going to have you change into a gown,” he told Sky, “and then I can inspect you further.”

“Sure,” she said, sounding unsure.

I hesitated, not wanting to leave her, but I wasn’t going to stay in here while she changed. I gave her a reassuring nod before stepping out.

The doctor and I walked out into the hallway.

He shut the door behind us, and then he gave me a frown. “Has she remembered anything?”

I shrugged. “I don’t think so.”

Dr. Chavez looked concerned, his brow furrowing as he glanced at her chart on his tablet. “I think we should seriously consider having her go see the brain experts in Denver. I’ve been on the phone with them, and they want to run some brain scans and some tests that we can’t do here.”

I was unnerved by what he was saying. The hallway suddenly felt too bright, too sterile. I didn’t want her to go, and I was worried about her. “Do you really think so?”

“Yep. I’m going to talk to her when I go back in there, and we have someone on staff who could drive her to Denver.”

I grunted. “No. If we can wait until tomorrow, I could take her myself.” I thought about my schedule. Damon would understand, I knew he would. I wasn’t going to let her go with just some random person from the hospital. I would take some time off if I had to.

That had me thinking back on the case. I wondered if anything had been found out, but I doubted it. If anyone found something, they would have called me or my brother.

The door opened. “I’m ready.”

I hesitated, not wanting to go in. “I’ll just wait out here.”

The doctor nodded. He shut the door behind him, and I waited in the hallway. I felt useless and worried. I felt like I’d just had adrenaline dumped inside of me.

I leaned against the wall, pulled out my phone, and called Damon.

He answered on the second ring. “What’s up?”

“Have you heard anything new?”

A nurse walked by, giving me a curious glance.

Damon let out a sigh. “Nothing. It seems like everything’s just gone dead. We don’t know what happened.”

I had an idea. “I’m going to take her to the car she was in. Is it still impounded?”

My brother grunted. “Yeah.”
