“I’m just thinking that seeing the car will help her remember. Or maybe I’ll drive her to Casper.”

“Wait a second. Why would you do that?”

“I don’t know,” I burst out, pacing the few steps the narrow hallway allowed. “Maybe if she saw the area, she could remember something.”

“Just come to work.”

“Listen, I’m at the hospital with her, and she’s being checked out, but the doctor wants her to go to Denver tomorrow, so if we don’t find something out soon, she’ll be leaving town. I think I’m going to go with her, though.”

Damon sputtered out a laugh. “Are you serious? You’re just going to up and leave for this woman you don’t even know. Are you kidding me?”

Anger shot through me. “She’s a person. Just because she can’t remember anything doesn’t mean we should give up on her. She needs someone with her.”

I realized, as I was arguing with my brother, that I felt passionate about it. The intensity of my feelings surprised even me.

My brother let out a little moan. “Well, fine, then. How about you take her to the car, and then if you have to drive to Casper today, you can do some investigating with her. Do you want me to send a partner with you?”

“No,” I said, brushing that off. It would be so awkward to have my partner seated up in the front while Sky was stuck in the back. Plus, I wanted more time with her, even if all the uncertainties weren’t good for me. “Okay, then that’s what I’ll do.”

“Hold up, bro.” He let out a sigh. “Rose tried to pin me down at the party last night.”

“About what?”

“She wanted answers about you and …Sky.”

“What?” I said, feeling annoyed, my voice echoing slightly in the empty corridor. “What did you say?”

“Hey, calm down. I didn’t say anything and, it was quite comical how she tried to grill all of our siblings, and everyone kept their mouths shut. Even Mom and Dad wouldn’t say very much to her. Of course, you know Mom doesn’t like her at all. She is ticked about how Rose treated you the last year and a half.”

I didn’t want to get into all this emotional junk. “Okay, whatever. I’m going to go.”

“After you’re done with the doctor, why don’t you stop by the impound lot and then come and report in? Bring her with you, and then we’ll decide if you guys are going to Casper or not.”

“All right.” I ended the call.

Dr. Chavez opened the door and walked out.

From inside, I heard soft crying. The sound pierced through me like a physical pain.

“What is going on?” I said, moving past him.

The doctor tried to stop me. “Just let her get dressed,” he said, but I had already walked in.

She was still wearing the gown. Her head hung in a defeated way, and she was crying. Her shoulders shook with each sob, and in that moment, I knew that I would move heaven and earth to prevent her from crying.

I got to her side. “What’s wrong? What’s going on?”

She looked up at me and sniffed. Tears clung to her lashes. “The doctor wants me to go to Denver. He says that you want to take me tomorrow.”

I nodded, taking her hand impulsively. Her fingers were cold against my palm. “Is that okay, if I go with you?”

She clasped my hand, and then she sniffed and nodded. “Yes, I just—I just hate this so much. Why hasn’t anyone come for me?”

I pulled her in and held her, breathing in the faint scent of my shampoo in her hair. “I hate it too. We’re going to figure this out. Don’t worry. We’ll figure it out together.”
