He tutted.“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I don’t give a damn what you think,”I retorted, reaching up to the cupboardover the sink but finding it filled with tinned goods.

“You won’t find any.”He crossed his arms over his broad chest as hewatched me search, his eyes narrowed on me.

No cupboard went unchecked in my quest, and reaching the last one, I wasabout to give up, and hopethatthe tablets alone would work on their own, when I hit the jackpot. A sad smile lifted my lips as I grabbed the bottle of vodka and stomped past him, ignoring the flash of worry on his face.

At least, I thought it was worry, but I knew I was kidding myself. The onlything I was certain he was worried about was me getting drunk, stripping down to my underwear, and humiliating myself like I’d done on our wedding night.

Soon, he wouldn’t have to deal with me making a fool of myself ever again.

Miles followed several steps behind me as I darted into the bathroom, slamming the door and locking it as he tried to put his foot in the gap to stop me from closing it.

His fist collided with the door, a deafening thud echoing around the smallspace.“Open the door, Sofia!”

Twisting the cap off the bottle, I ignored him and took a sip, grimacing at theburn of the alcohol as it slid down my throat. The neat vodka was enough to make me want to vomit, but I sucked in a breath and waited for it to settle in my stomach.

“Jailbait! Open the fucking door,”Miles roared, rattling the door handle.

“Go to hell,”I muttered, grabbing the blister packets from the cupboard.

Not giving myself a second to change my mind, I tore four codeine tabletsfree and shoved them into my mouth, downing them with a mouthful of vodka. Once they slid down my throat, I ripped another four from the packaging and swallowed them as a sense of peace finally descended through me.

Chapter 21

Miles

Fuck sake. Sofia having a tantrum and drinking herself into a coma whilelocked in the bathroom wasnotwhat I needed. What I needed was to focus on hacking Ash’s security system he’d installed on the computer. The sooner I figured it out, the sooner we could get out of here.

But no.

Jailbait had other ideas.

“Open the door, Sofia,”I yelled, thumping the wood.

Silence.

I muttered a curse, my temper flaring once more. No way in hell was Ileaving her with a bottle of vodka. Knowing her, she’d drink it all, pass out, and whack her head.

Or choke on her own vomit.

Fuck my life.

“Jailbait! Open the fucking door!”I rattled the handle, cursing again whenthe door only shook but didn’t open.

From inside, she said something, but it was too quiet to hear. Ipressed my ear against the door to listen; no doubt she was spewing vitriol my way. Only, I was met with the undeniable crackle of a blister packet being torn open.

In every safehouse, we kept a stash of medication in case one of us neededpain relief and a doctor couldn’t get to us. It was strong shit too, intended to be used if one of us had been shot or stabbed. So why did Sofia need painkillers? Had I hurt her when I was rough with her earlier?

My stomach lurched.“Sofe, please. Open the door, Ijustwant to make sureyou’re okay.”

This time, a sob filtered through, followed by the rustling of moreblister packets opening.

My heart froze.

She wasn’t-

Fuck, was she taking tablets with the vodka?
