“Careful, sweetheart. Your pulse is going wild,” Rune chuckles. I notice how long his blonde lashes are when his eyes crinkle up in a smile. He lifts a finger to the soft spot behind my ear and runs it down my neck. I shiver from the cool sensation.

“Ugh,” I say, swatting his hand away.

“I said put her down, Rune,” Dennis says. He’s not raising his voice, but he sounds pissed.

“Well, she’s got her legs wrapped around me. It wouldn’t be polite to just drop her.”

I unwind my legs at warp speed, and he grins when he sets me down. Then the two men, vamps, stare at each other wordlessly for a minute that feels like ten.

“Is anyone going to tell me what the hell is going on here?” I ask.

Dennis shuts his eyes, and when they open, they shift right to me.

“Dennis here is making sure I know you’re off-limits,” Rune says, dusting away the dirt my shoes left on the back of his pants.

“She’s with me,” Dennis practically growls.

“No worries, old friend.” Rune holds up his hands, looking me over again. I can’t help but feel heat gather between my thighs when his eyes sweep over my cleavage. “I only wanted to meet our new business partner.”

My thoughts start jumbling together, and my mouth goes dry.

“You knew who I was?”

“Saw you come in with Denny,” he says with a wink. “I heard he was in charge of picking up the human girl and wanted to see if his efforts were successful. Though I have to admit, I’m a little hurt that I wasn’t asked to do this particular job. I had no idea you’d be so...delicious.”

I roll my eyes at his comment, but I have to wonder how things would have played out if Rune had shown up at the graveyard instead of Dennis. Would I have followed along? The man exudes dangerous vibes that scream of hot one-night stands, but I’m not sure I would have trusted him enough to get in a car with him for any period of time.

Not that I should be trusting Dennis, but he at least looks softer.

“Who sent you?” I ask Dennis.

He pinches the bridge of his nose.

“This is exactly why he didn’t ask you,” he says to Rune before answering me. “Our boss likes to reveal himself on his own terms. I promise you’ll meet him.”

“It sounds like this is my ninety-day trial period to make sure I’m a good fit for the ghost-hunting company. Do you guys want to make sure I’m worth the health insurance costs or something?” I ask and fold my arms over my chest. I don’t need anyone looking there anymore tonight.

Rune chuckles at my question, running a hand over his hair. I resist the urge to do the same. I know I look rumpled as shit, but I won’t let either of these dudes think I care.

“It’s something like that, but it’s basically just the paperwork side of everything I already told you,” Dennis says, moving closer to touch my wrist. I draw back from the cool touch. How did I brush that feeling off with Rune?

I make myself a promise to be more aware of these things. I’m not in my small hometown anymore.

“You have lots to learn, sweet Bea, but I can see you’re not in the mood to continue our evening as planned,” Rune says. His eyebrow is cocked in a question, but I shake my head.

“Well then, I’m sure Denny will show you the ropes. If you find you need someone with a little more experience, here’s where to find me, but I’m sure our paths will cross again.”

He holds a card out between two of his fingers. I shove it into my pocket without looking at it, and he gives me one more flash of that sharp smile before turning away.

He’s gone in the time it takes for me to look up from my shoes. Vampires seem pretty normal until you realize just how fast they move.

Dennis places a hand on my shoulder. I shrug it off.

“Sorry about that.”

“Ok, but what happened to the wholeI can have fun with whomever I choosething you said a few hours ago?”

His eyes go wide.
