"I'm waiting," I said.

He heaved a sigh and began typing out a long message. I leaned over the table to take a look and make sure it was at least as dirty as the stuff he said to me, and was satisfied. He sent it off with a whoosh sound and a grimace. "And with that, I think you've won, because I'm too scared to continue. I don't want to know what else you can come up with that was worse than that."

"You were pretty inventive with that message," I said. "There were a few things in there I haven't heard of before." I feigned a coy look and peeked up through my lashes. "Maybe you'd like to demonstrate?"

Mason's eyes flared with heat, the green turning bright and fiery.

"You're going to regret daring me to write something so dirty," he warned.

"No," I said with a sultry smile. "I don't think I will."

Twenty-Five

If Mason had been excitedwhen playing with the rescue dogs, it was nothing compared to his utter elation when he finally got to bring Lucky home.

"Here you go, boy," Mason said with a beaming grin. "This is your home now."

Mason had carried the tiny puppy in his arms until we reached his apartment, then set him down so he could explore at his leisure.

Lucky, with his tail wagging vigorously and his tongue hanging out of his wide open mouth, let out a weak sound that was barely a bark and bounced through the doorway and into the apartment.

He snuffled with his nose on the ground, taking in all the new smells, and yipped with happiness when he found the corner with his doggy bed, food dish and pile of toys. He sank his teeth into a stuffed toy in the shape of a bone then dashed back to Mason to lay the bone at his feet. Lucky yelped and sat on his hind legs, looking up at Mason with a panting, doggy grin.

Mason practically swooned with anawwwand swept the puppy up into his arms to bury his face in his fur.

"You're such a good boy," Mason cooed. "Yes you are."

I put a hand to my mouth to hide my smile. Mason was too cute like this.

He cuddled Lucky long enough for the puppy to get squirmy and make whining noises. Mason put him down, and Lucky continued his exploration.

"This is definitely what love feels like," Mason declared as he wiped the dog fur from his hands onto his jeans.

I bit my lip, trying to stop a besotted expression from overtaking my face. My heart was close to melting in my chest. Apparently hot men with animals were my weakness. Who knew.

"There's a few toys over there in that pile I don't recognize," I said.

"I went back to that store and bought some more." Mason looked sheepish. "I wanted to get a good variety just in case. I want Lucky to be happy here."

I couldn't stop myself. I threw my arms around Mason and squished him to my chest, trying not to coo in the same way Mason had done to his dog.

"You're too cute," I told him.

He put his hands on my shoulders.

"Isn't that what I'm supposed to be saying to Lucky?" he asked, bemused.

I let him go with one last tight squeeze.

"We should probably follow him and make sure he doesn't get into anything he shouldn't," I said.

"I tried to puppy-proof this place as well as I could," Mason said. "But there is always a risk of him getting into my closet and eating my shoes."

Mason and I stalked the dog as he made his way through the apartment, sticking his nose into everything.

"I'll have to have Connor over soon," Mason said. "He'll definitely want to play with Lucky once he knows I have a dog."

"And it'll be good for him to get used to Connor and Quinn, just in case you need someone to check on him if you can't be there," I said.
