"We owe it to our son to make sure this horror stops," Talon explained. "Also, Collin would deny this, but he still feels responsible for everything that is happening. Only because he was the first of you to meet a vampire."

"It's not his fault." Did Jared sometimes wish Collin had never met a vampire? Yes, but it wasn't as if his brother had gone out with the intention to attract the attention of one. They all wore these marks. They'd all been in danger from the moment they were born. When Jared was being honest, Collin's actions had only shattered their ignorance about the mess they were in.

"I know it's not his fault," Talon said. "Cognitively, he knows too, but it can be difficult to change a more subconscious notion than that."

Jared nodded, because wasn't that exactly what Silas was struggling with too? Rationally, Silas knew that his sire was dead, that he couldn't hurt him anymore, and yet... An image rose to the forefront of Jared's mind. The memory of Silas's face, scrunched up in frustration as he struggled not to let himself experience too much pleasure... Jared wished he could reach straight into Silas's heart and take all the fear out of it.

Just as he thought that, though, a shrill noise sounded from above. A scream that had his blood freezing in his veins.

That was Silas's voice.

Jared raced out of the living room and up the stairs as quickly as his feet would carry him.
