I turned to Talon again. "Can I at least see him?"
"I'm not sure that would be wise," Talon said. "He explicitly asked for you to stay here where you're safe."
"But..."
"Luke," Collin tried to get my attention again. "We have a meeting with WAFFER tonight, remember? If everything goes well, this will all be over in a snap. There's no reason for you to worry so much. I promise you. We're going to get the bastard who did this to Damian, and then Damian can come back here, okay?"
My jaw clenched, even as I tried to relax. "If WAFFER doesn't help me, I'm not helping them."
"Understood," Collin said, and then he gave me a hug. "Everything's going to be fine, little brother. Promise."
I nodded, even though I didn't believe him.
It was just what I had learned to do over the past months. Smile and nod, no matter how you feel. No matter how vast the hollowness in your chest.
I suppressed the sob that tried to break free from me. I hadn’t lost Damian again. Not yet, not truly.
So why did it feel like I had?
