“Yeah.” I directed my gaze at my fingers. “You know, all my life people have looked at me differently when they found out I was omega. I think we shouldn't care whether people are male or female or omega or whatever.”
“I'm sorry,” Finn said. “But you know I don't reallycarewhether it's a boy or a girl. I'm only curious. I'd love to have a son just as much as I'd love to have a daughter.”
The way he phrased that made me chuckle. “I keep forgetting that daughters are valued higher in dragon society.”
Finn waved me off. “That's stupid too. Okay, let's not find out the sex.” He took the brush up again. “So uh... are we going to pick a boy's name and a girl's name?”
“Or a unisex name,” I suggested. “I like unisex names.” I had a full list in my head, actually.
“That's a good idea,” Finn said.
“You don't mind if we don't go the traditional route?” I asked.
“The traditional route?”
“You know, naming the firstborn son after his grandfather. I heard that's a thing you do.”
“Oh. Yes. I was named that way. But we don't have to do that. It's getting kind of antiquated anyway.”
“What was your father's name?” I asked, because I wasn't as ready to throw his people's traditions away as he was.
“Embry,” Finn said, the barest hint of mourning in his tone. He'd been young when his father had died.
“Alright. If we're having a boy, that'll be his middle name, then.”
“Middle name?” Finn raised an eyebrow at me. “Right. I forgot you had that option.” His lips quirked up. “Our kid's going to havetwonames! The other kids will be so jealous.”
I laughed. “Okay, that's settled then. We still need a first name, though.”
Finn nodded, expression thoughtful. “Do you know any good unisex names?”
“A few,” I admitted. There had been a time in my life when I'd counted on having a few children one day, and I'd thought about names a lot then. I rubbed my belly and focused on the flutters of movement from inside. Man, this was really happening. And this little one needed a good name.
“Why don't you tell me what names you like and then I'll pick one? That way we'll both like it.”
That wasn't a bad idea, but... “All the names I've thought of so far are... regular. I don't know many dragon names. Let alone unisex ones.”
“It doesn't have to be a dragon name.”
“I just thought, if we're going to raise our child on this island...”
“Then at least their name will be unique around here,” Finn said with a smile.
“I guess you're right. Okay so...” I took a swig of water from a bottle I'd brought into the room with me and thought about what names I liked most. “What do you think about Skylar? I also like Kian, River, Rain, Winter, Riley, Payton…”
Finn laughed a little.
“What?” I asked.
“It’s nothing. I just always find it funny that you guys have names like River and Winter.”
“Your last name is Fireclaws,” I pointed out.
He laughed again. “You got me there. But actually, I kind of like it. We should have a theme like that. Names inspired by nature.” Finn swung the brush enthusiastically. “We can keep that up with his or her siblings.”
“Siblings?” I laughed. “How many do you want?”
He seemed to think about it for a moment. “I'm not sure, but... a couple? I always thought it would be fun to have siblings. I want that for my kid.”
