His eyes narrowed. “Maybe. But not just anyone knows that name.” He glanced uneasily around the room. “It’s mostly classified.”
Henry frowned. “I thought you worked with security systems.”
“I do,” Everett responded carefully. “In a way. That’s all I’m at liberty to say. Although, probably not for much longer. My employer frowns on attempted kidnapping.”
Henry’s eyes widened and he stared at Sawyer. “Are you going to press charges against Everett?”
“No,” Sawyer replied with a shake of his head. “Everett was doing everything he could to keep Levi and the people he cared about safe. Marlene deserves to be punished, even if she is your mother.”
Emma squeezed his hand and he looked down to see her smiling up at him. “Thank you, I totally agree.”
“Thank you,” Henry and Everett fervently chorused together.
“Let’s go tell Mom it’s all over with,” Sawyer said, pulling Emma towards the door.
They all agreed and everyone started heading for the house. Nat held Oliver’s arm back for a private chat.
“This is wicked pissah, Oliver,” he enthused. “You’ve got some good additions to your family, old buddy. Sawyer is a top-notch software developer and April’s deep dive revealed that‘Uncle’Everett tests highly secured government facilities to find their weaknesses. You’re looking at two pros in their profession at the highest level. He even does work for Jason Ambones,” he added with a huge grin. “April is pissy about that.”
“Good to know,” Oliver replied with a grin. “It’s been a crazy year, that’s for sure. Is Everett’s information classified?”
“Need to know basis only,” Nat confirmed.
“I only asked because Marsha says she needs to know everything, and I don’t like keeping secrets from her.”
“She’s your partner, old buddy, so it’s your decision. You know her best.”
“I trust her with my life,” Oliver said softly as they headed towards the house. “You headed home?”
“Yeah, as soon I say goodbye to everyone. April’s waiting for me.”
They chuckled together and joined the celebration going on in the house.
Chapter 13
Sawyer stood on hisfront deck and surveyed his surroundings. Halloween had come and gone and Levi’s birthday was coming up in another week on November 16th. He smiled at the memories of being able to carve pumpkins with Levi and put candles inside them. What was left of the candles sputtered inside their sagging orange homes and sent shadows flickering across the porch. The slight scent of scorched pumpkin lingered on the night air.
