Ty’s voice came over the line. “Hi, Emma, this is Ty. Tell Chessy I have your car in my sights about a quarter of a mile back and Oliver is right behind me.”
Emma rolled her eyes. “Ty said to tell you he’s not far behind us.” Then her eyes opened wide. “Look out, Chessy!”
“I see him,” Chessy bit out, slamming on her brakes as hard as she could. She barely avoided smacking the black SUV in front of them in the ass before he sped up and both girls heaved a sigh of relief. “That was close,” Chessy added.
“I’ll say,” Emma squeaked.
“What’s going on?” Ty asked grimly.
“Some idiot slammed on his brakes in front of us,” she explained to Ty, then sucked in her breath. “Look out, Chessy, he’s doing it again!”
Chessy swore and slammed on her brakes again, and this time she slowed enough to safely go off the shoulder and out of the freeway traffic.
As she rolled to an abrupt stop, Emma’s heart rate shot through the roof when the black SUV in front of them pulled over and started backing up.
Emma automatically yelled into the phone. “A black SUV forced us over Ty, and now he’s pulled over and is backing up!”
“Lock your doors,” Ty demanded, “I’m coming up behind you.”
“There are two men getting out of the car,” Chessy screeched, slamming the door locks on her door.
Emma dropped the phone and hit the button on the glove box. Taking out the 9mm inside, she slammed the cartridge chamber into the butt and pointed it at the windshield.
“Emma, what are you doing?” Chessy squealed.
Suddenly a blur of blue came screeching past them and turned sideways between them and the SUV. “It’s Ty, don’t shoot,” Chessy squealed again.
They heard the screech of brakes behind them again and realized Oliver’s black Escalade had dropped in behind Emma’s car and Oliver was getting out of the car. It didn’t stop the two men though. They had guns in their hands and came running at Ty who was getting into his glovebox.
Emma slammed the door open and stood up behind it to fire a warning shot into the air, and then pointed it back at the men. “Next time I won’t miss,” she shouted.
They turned around and started running back to their SUV when Ty pointed a gun at them through his window. Oliver raced up to Emma and grabbed the 9mm from her hands. She shot him a furious glare.
Ty grabbed his cell phone and took a picture of the license plate as the SUV hauled ass back to the freeway and quickly disappeared from sight. Then he came running up to Chessy’s window.
Emma dropped down on the car seat, leaned over between her knees, and promptly threw up on the ground. Her head was aching and her temples throbbed under the lump on her forehead. Nausea was a bitch. She always got nauseous with a headache and this headache was the mother lode.
Levi was sleeping peacefully through it all in spite of the commotion around him.
Chessy jumped out of the car and flew into Ty’s arms, sobbing hysterically. “They could have killed you, Ty. What is going on?”
They all stared when the black pickup truck pulled off the freeway in front of Ty’s car and Sawyer jumped out and ran back to meet them. “What the hell happened here?” he asked, looking totally freaked out. He noticed Oliver was holding the 9mm. “You know how to use that?” he asked laconically.
“Of course, but it’s not mine, it’s Emma’s. She fired a shot and chased off the two men that came at us armed with weapons.”
Sawyer kneeled in front of Emma, his nose curling slightly. “Do you have a permit for the gun, baby brat?”
She nodded weakly and lay back in the seat, his endearment making her teary. It had been a long time since she’d heard it. “Conceal and carry too. In my glovebox.”
“That’s good then. I hear sirens and the police will be here soon. You don’t want to get caught with a gun without the proper documentation.”
“I see you were serious when you said Emma would be seeing you again,” Oliver said, his eyes narrowing. “You followed us.”
“I never say things I don’t mean.” He stood and opened the back door of Emma’s car.
“What are you doing?” Emma asked faintly.
“I’m taking you and Levi with me,” he announced firmly. “I can protect you at my place.”
