“Good to know.” He kissed her deeply, his hands pushing up beneath her t-shirt to find the front of her bra once again. “Let’s see if we can get back there.”
Truck tires crunched on the gravel outside the front door and they both groaned. They waited with baited breath as heavy footsteps came onto the deck and clunked to a stop in front of the door. The next thing they heard was metal flipping onto metal and Jake heaved a sigh of relief.
“It’s only the mailman.”
Then came the knock on the door.
“Dammit,” he swore softly and stepped behind her to yank open the front door.
Vidalia giggled at the look of surprise on the old man’s face. His fist was still in mid knock, but he smiled quickly at Jake, his gray moustache lifting as his teeth appeared.
“Howdy, Jake. You have a package and I know you don’t like me to leave them on the porch. He fumbled in his bag and brought out a cardboard box the size of a loaf of bread and handed it to him. Then he doffed his hat at Vidalia. “Ma’am,” he said, and then turned around and went clunking off the deck and back to his huge truck.
“You didn’t even say thank you,” Vidalia chided with another giggle. “That poor man must have thought you really had a wild hair going on.”
Jake’s eyes narrowed at her. “Wild hair huh? I’ll give you a wild hair.”
Vidalia shrieked and ran as Jake chased her around the table and through the living room, finally catching her and swooping her up over his shoulder in a firemen’s carry. Then he took her into his bedroom and dumped her on the bed and proceeded to tickle her until she screamed.
“Uncle! Uncle!”
He pulled her arms above her head and held them there while kissing her thoroughly. “I love it when you laugh,” he purred, nuzzling the side of her face.
He allowed her to pull her arms down and she cupped his face in her hands and kissed him back. “Oh, Jake, I love it when you kiss me,” she whispered.
Chapter 11
Jake moved over ontohis elbow and ran his thumb down her lips. “You held out long enough.”
“We’ve only known each other eight days, nine if you count the night I got to the cabin,” she protested with a laugh.
He supposed it was a good thing they had been interrupted so many times in the living room because that really wasn’t the way he wanted their first time together to play out. He wasn’t sure Vidalia was really ready for that final commitment either, even though she’d given no indication of stopping him.
“You’re right,” he said, sitting up and pulling her up beside him. “Nine days isn’t very long, although I know what I want. I just need you to know what you want for sure.”
She searched his face with those incredible eyes of hers and then nodded. “Thank you,” she said simply. Then she smiled. “One thing I do know I want is to go back to my cabin and get some clothes. They scurried for the truck before someone else could knock on Jake’s door.
