Thank the gods for that.
Shades snarled as they ran toward us on all fours, scattering the top layer of snow. Mason fired his gun, causing orange explosions as he hit each of them square in the chest. Titan severed one of their heads with a single swing of his metal arm.
Phoenix teleported around the snowy field and slit throats with the blue jeweled dagger Bellamy had given him. The stones in the hilt matched the ones in his collar.
“Are you all right?”I asked Lazarus. Commotion came from the drawing room, the bangs and swords clashing trickling through the broken window and into the night.
“What did I tell you?”came his response.“Focus on Lucifer.”
“Just making sure you were still alive.”
“You can’t get rid of me that easily, Pride.”
Hearing his voice ignited a fire inside me. Gave me strength. I lunged at Lucifer, sliced at his bicep, and jumped out of his reach before Gray attacked him, then Raiden.
A simple life with Lazarus.
During a time when so much was unknown, when the world was in absolute chaos, that was one thing I knew without a doubt in my mind. I didn’t need more time to figure it out. I wanted Lazarus. I wanted to see how deep our bond could go. Wanted to reach inside his very soul and see all the things he’d never shown to anyone.
I wanted to love him… and be loved in return.
That desire propelled me forward. Kallias attacked after me, then Castor. Galen and Raiden crashed into Lucifer, one on each side, before Daman leapt into the air, his movements in equal parts graceful and lethal as he brought his blade down on Lucifer’s neck.
Demons materialized around us, a mixture of shades and upper-level ones who’d come to their king’s aid. Kyo, Mason, Titan, and Phoenix cut them down while Warrin blasted them with walls of ice, freezing them where they stood.
“Clear your mind,”Pride whispered.“And allow pure instinct to guide you. Trust me.”
A weightlessness then came over my body, spreading from the tips of my fingers inward, traveling through my bloodstream. I was aware of my actions—aware of every forward lunge, slash of my sword, and pivot. But it was as though someone else had control over my body, like I was on the outside looking in. On autopilot.
Each of my brothers followed suit. A dazed look appeared in their eyes. Their movements were sharp. Harmonious. One of us attacked before another dove in. Because of our blood bond, I had always been able to sense them, but this went beyond that. I was attuned to their every breath, every twitching of their muscles. They moved, and I moved. Repeat. We didn’t speak, telepathically or otherwise.
We didn’t need to. We had tapped into that synchronization from before, only now, we had Kallias with us to complete the chain.
The world around me faded away. I had tunnel vision, seeing only my target.
“Enough of this!” Black wings tinged with red sprang from Lucifer’s back. As he lifted from the ground, Galen grabbed his left wing and slammed him back to the snow.
I didn’t stop to consider why Lucifer hadn’t been able to teleport. I moved on reflex, as did my brothers, as we continued the synchronized attack.
Fallen angels dropped from the sky. The mates took care of them, causing cracks of thunder as each one died. Mason used his celestial bullets, hitting them in the heart. As a sharp shooter, he rarely missed.
And then, it happened.
Daman’s blade grazed Lucifer’s chest, and a thin red line appeared along his collarbone. Kallias thrust his sword into Lucifer’s side… and it pierced him. Lucifer gasped, both pain and shock morphing his expression. Gray jumped up and sent his sword crashing down, the sharp edge cutting into the fleshy tissue of Lucifer’s shoulder.
Whereas our weapons once had no effect, they now cut through him like butter.
“Don’t lose focus!” a familiar voice yelled from nearby. A deep, pleasing voice that replaced my blood with rich honey. My mate.
Kallias pierced Lucifer’s side at the same time Castor struck him in the stomach. Gray thrust his short sword into his spine. Raiden’s blade dug into Lucifer’s rib cage. Daman and Bellamy stabbed him in his lower abdomen. Galen swung his sword and lodged it into Lucifer’s upper back.
“Do you regret it now?” I asked, stepping in front of him. My voice was deeper than usual, like it had come from someone else.
Blood trickled from the corner of Lucifer’s lips as he stared at me. Surprised. Perhaps even a bit frightened.
I then jabbed my sword into the base of his throat, the steel going all the way through to the other side. The blade glistened red as I retracted it.
Lucifer gurgled, choking on blood and spit. He lifted a shaking hand to the hole in his neck, red pooling between his fingers.
