“Uh-oh,” Gray whispered. “He used his daddy voice.”
Alastair opened the driver’s-side door. “Don’t call it that.”
Gray hid his grin against my arm, and my heart swelled. We slid into the back seat just as Raiden jogged over and opened the passenger door. Bellamy and Clara were riding with Galen and Simon.
Smooth jazz played through the speakers as we left the mansion and drove down the narrow road, the ocean to the left of us. The moon reflected off the surface, making it shimmer.
Gray napped against me on the way there, his soft breaths leaving him in a little puff. God. He was too adorable. I pressed my face into his hair, breathing him in. His words drifted back to me.
“So you don’t feel anything for me? This is just sex?”
The sadness in his voice had been like a punch to the heart. But I hadn’t been able to give him an answer. Mainly because I didn’t fucking know what I wanted. My feelings for him confused me. One thing I knew without a doubt?
Gray was unforgettable.
“Remember what I told you.” Alastair met my gaze in the rearview mirror. His cold stare then flickered back to the road. “No violence in the club.”
“Got it.” A small dagger was tucked into my boot. Just in case. I had no reason to believe the monsters in the club would honor that policy.
We drove to the outskirts of town, passing abandoned factories and woods. During the drive, I mentally noted every turn and street name. Mainly out of habit.
“Are you sure there’s a club out here?” I asked.
Raiden peered back at me, his hat on backward and his shirt hugging his muscled arms and chest. He reminded me of a fuckboy. “Yep. Try to have fun tonight. Let loose a little. You’re more uptight than this one.” He motioned to Alastair, who scoffed under his breath.
The club was in the middle of nowhere, away from the bustle of town and prying eyes. Cars were parked in the lot in front of an old warehouse, and a group of people walked inside the building. No, not people.
Monsters.
“Are we there?” Gray sat up and rubbed his eyes before looking around. He smiled at me. “Thanks for letting me sleep on you. Your arm is comfy.”
“Feel free to use it anytime.”
He averted his eyes, a sudden awkwardness coming over him. Yep. Definitely hadn’t forgotten our discussion.
I got out of the SUV and helped Gray out before facing the entrance.Kraveflashed above the door. As we approached the entrance, a large man came into view. Dark hair, muscles, and a deep scowl.
“That’s Nick,” Gray told me. “He’s the bouncer. A werewolf.”
My scalp prickled.
“Hey, hot stuff,” Nick said, that scowl all but vanishing when he saw Gray. He reached for him.
Okay. That prickling on my scalp turned to a full-blown blaze. I moved Gray behind me, glaring at the wolf. “Don’t touch him.”
Nick’s eyes glowed an eerie yellow as he looked me up and down. Sizing me up.
“Um.” Gray stepped around me but didn’t let go of my hand. He gave the wolf a cute little grin. “This is Mason. He’s my human.”
My human.Damn if that didn’t make my heart flutter.
“He smells like a hunter.” The wolf snarled, flashing sharp teeth.
It triggered an automatic response inside me. One that went on the defensive and made me reach for my dagger.
A hard grip on my wrist stopped me, and I met Alastair’s icy eyes. “Behave, or I’ll make you wait in the car. As for you.” He turned to the bouncer. “You know better than to antagonize a patron. I’ll be having a word with Konnar about this misconduct. Now, step aside.”
Nick lowered his gaze and let us pass without another word.
