I didn’t get nervous before going on air, but a bit of adrenaline still shot through me in the minutes before we went live. I ran over my introduction in my head and put myself in the zone.
The cue was given to me, signaling we were live, and I looked into the main camera.
“Good evening,” I said, wearing my best smile. Kyler and Brysen told me I tended to flirt with the camera, and I caught myself doing it now. “You’re watching the five o’clock news. I’m Royal Henderson.”
“And I’m Michelle Lovelace. Construction has begun for a new hotel in Addersfield.”
Michelle continued her segment about the updates to Main Street, and I sat there—posture perfect—and listened to her, occasionally flicking a gaze to the camera.
After she finished her piece, I led us into a commercial break. As we waited to go back on air, I took a small drink of water and cleared my throat. When we returned, Michelle welcomed everyone back, and it was time for my segment.
“Spring is certainly in the air as Addersfield prepares for the Spring Fever Festival,” I said, eye-fucking the camera. “If you haven’t bought your tickets, there’s still time, but they’re going fast—”
That’s when all the lights went off.
