Every man I’d ever loved had broken my heart. And even more than that, many had broken my bones, too. Shattered my sense of self-worth.
Writing was my escape.
However, not even my characters could save me that day and so I clicked out of the document.
After work, I rode my bike home and walked into the apartment. Brysen was snoring softly on the couch, and I walked quietly to my room, not wanting to wake him. I plopped on my bed and went to the text messages on my phone.
Almost two months had passed since I’d talked to Declan, but I hadn’t deleted our text thread.
I scrolled up a ways and read through the cutesy texts we’d sent each other. Ones where he asked me to come to his hotel room with winky face emojis, and ones where I’d played hard to get. Then, he’d bribed me with pizza, and I’d caved. I read the last text I’d sent that said I hated him, and I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore.
Before I could stop myself, I sent another.
Me:I miss u.
I shut off my phone so no one could bother me and turned over, closing my eyes.
Maybe once upon a time, Declan and I’d had something. But that something was gone. We were from two different worlds, and no matter how much we tried to fit together, the pieces of the puzzle would never fall into place.
The god had returned to Olympus, and the farm boy had gone back to his farm.
