Chapter 11
Kyler
“And then they all died horrible deaths, never to be heard from again. The end.”
“Ugh.” I hit the backspace key and scrubbed my hands over my face.
I wasn’t in the right headspace to write about two guys falling in love. My sour mood made me want to kill them and call it a day.
Not wanting to be cooped up in the cramped apartment all day, I’d taken my laptop and gone to the coffee shop to write. So far, I’d only written two pages and I hated every word of them.
Romance was bullcrap. There I was writing about two guys realizing they had feelings for each other and expressing that love for all to see, when in reality, it would more than likely end up being that one of them was deep in the closet and he’d break the other guy’s heart and marry some girl just to keep up appearances.
Maybe I should write a tragedy instead,I thought to myself.
Or a damn memoir, since that’s how most of my relationships had gone. Not that Declan and I’d been dating or anything. It’d just been a hangout and then sex afterward, which I was no stranger to. But in theory, if wediddate, it’d end in heartbreak.
I didn’t know why I attracted the closeted guys. Unless there was a big, neon sign hanging over my head that readcute and a pushoverso they thought they could slide into my life, have amazing sex, and then cast me aside.
The coffee shop was busier than normal. It was a Wednesday afternoon, long after the morning rush, but nearly every table was occupied.
“Do you think he’ll come back here?” a girl at the table beside mine asked.
“I hope so!” the other answered. “Can you believe they actually filmed part of the movie in here? Like, Brittany, Declan could’ve touched where we’re sitting.”
They squealed and started slurping their iced coffees.
I rolled my eyes. It was the same coffee shop we’d used for the scene I was in, so I should’ve known that’d increase the place’s popularity. Looking around, I noticed a majority of the customers were girls, mostly teenagers but there were some older ones, too.
When Declan and I’d sat on the hill by the lake, we’d talked a lot. He’d shared funny stories about his career and told me about some of the places he’d visited. What had started as me being extremely nervous and not saying much had then turned into me becoming comfortable around him and sharing stories of my own. I’d told him about Brysen and Royal and how I didn’t know what I’d do without them.
That day with Declan had been one of the best I’d ever had. Not only because I was infatuated with him—and had been slightly obsessed with him for years—but also because he made me smile a lot. Made me feel like I mattered. He was gentle and charismatic and never made me feel inferior to him.
Three days had passed since I’d seen him. I hadn’t checked my social media, not wanting to come across one of his posts. I wasn’t sure if I was more pissed or upset with him.
He’d mentioned that filming for the movie would be finished in another two weeks.
Two weeks and he’d leave Addersfield.
I looked at my laptop, specifically at the blinking cursor.
Writing wasn’t as easy as it sounded. There were times when the words flowed out of me, and then there were other times when I stared at the screen for hours, not able to write a single word. Perhaps I needed inspiration. Or a better attitude.
After saving my document, I shut down my laptop and packed it into my bag. No matter how productive I wanted to be, it wasn’t happening that day.
I made it to the apartment just as the evening news came on.
Brysen sat on the couch with a blanket around his shoulders and his legs curled under him. He looked like a twink burrito.
“About time you got home,” he said. “I’m starving.”
“You could always cook something.” I walked to my room and placed my laptop bag on the floor beside my desk. I’d unpack it later.
“Nuh uh,” Brysen called from the living room. “Last time I cooked, you said I was forbidden to ever cook in the kitchen again.”
“Yeah, because you almost burned the place down.”
“It’s not my fault! How was I supposed to know that the oil would drip on the burner and cause a mini explosion?”
