I went into the kitchen and placed the bowl inside the refrigerator, but not until I’d opened the lid and saw that it was her famous banana pudding. Bless her.
Patrick already knew Kathy, since that’s how Mom had met him, and he stood to give her a hug before pulling out her chair. Mom hugged her after that, and they gushed about her ugly sweater, which she’d made herself.
“And who is this cutie?” Aunt Kathy said, looking at Jacob.
I introduced them after that, and conversation started up again.
Mom wanted to know how Chris was doing and if he was still his perverted self—yes—and then she asked about Angel. Jacob hadn’t met Angel, yet, and his ears seemed to perk up at the mention of the black-haired rocker—or vampire, as Leo called him.
Thinking of Leo, I checked my phone and was relieved to see his text.
Leo:Made it. I’m about 2 go inside. This fucking sucks. I’ll call u when I leave. Love u.
Me:You can do this. Love you, too.
Even in text, Leo saying he loved me made me all giddy. It must’ve showed on my face, because then Mom started asking about my relationship. They were questions I had no trouble answering, and even Jacob chimed in with stories about the man we both adored.
I didn’t hear back from him, and I hoped that was a good sign that he was visiting with his family.
