Staring down into his eyes, I then moved, riding him slowly so as not to rush the moment.

“I love the feel of you,” he rasped, digging his fingertips into my hips. “Warm and tight.”

Placing my hands on his chest, I leaned forward and captured his lips. He’d recently shaved, so his stubble was gone, and I loved it just as much as when he didn’t shave.

I loved all sides to him. Every piece, good and bad.

His unyielding lips were hard, yet soft, and he kissed me as if it was the last time he’d ever be able to. He moaned in my mouth and drove his hips upward.

Pressure built inside me with each thrust, and I was moments away from shattering apart by the force of it.

“Kellan,” I whimpered, resting my forehead to his as he continued thrusting into me. My right hand laid over his heart. Over the shell that marked him as cursed. Tears slipped from my eyes as I hid my face in the crevice of his neck. “Do not stop.”

His hands slid up my back and settled on my shoulders. He held me in place as he drove up into me, hitting me in that special spot that had me coming undone within seconds. When he reached his peak of pleasure, he groaned and rose up, burying his face against my neck and holding me in his strong arms as his cock pulsated.

Neither of us moved afterward.

Kellan’s face was still against my throat and he hadn’t lessened his hold. I still had my arms around his neck and my hands tangled in his hair, my cheek resting on the top of his head.

As I felt his heart beating close to mine and felt his breath on my skin—as I breathed in his scent—I knew one thing was certain: I’d never be able to say goodbye. Not that day or the day after. Not a week from now or even years.

He’d once said that time would heal the wounds from me losing him, but he was wrong. No amount of time could ever take away the pain. There was no magical elixir that’d ever make me forget the hole in my chest of where my heart should be. Where he should be.

Kellan gently rolled me to my back before getting off the bed. He walked across the room, naked and too perfect, and stoked the fire, causing the flames to burn brighter.

I stared at the muscles in his back, the way they moved beneath his tanned skin, and the way the gray light shining in from outside highlighted those lines of muscle. Once the logs were crackling in the fire, he stood and watched the flames.

“Come to bed.”

It took him a moment before he turned to me. He touched his hand, the one he normally wore his ring on, but then dropped it when the ring wasn’t there. The action spoke wonders to his mood. He only ever fidgeted with his ring when something was on his mind.

Once he was beside me, I brought the blanket up to cover both of us, and I placed my hand on his chest. He scrutinized the ring on my finger and traced the intricate designs around the red stone.

“Would you like me to return it to you?” I asked.

“No,” he answered, laying his head against mine. “I want you to keep it. For you to…”

He shook his head and said nothing more. But he didn’t have to finish his unsaid sentence for me to know he wanted to say “to remember me by.”

“I wish your lute hadn’t been destroyed,” he said in a soft voice. “My mind is in a dark place.”

“I don’t need a lute to make music,” I responded, tilting my face to him.

And then I started to sing his favorite song, the one about swimming in the deepest sea, feeling free as you glided through the waves. Feeling the sun kiss your skin.

His eyes closed, and by the time I reached the last verse, he was asleep.

The next morning, Kellan woke me up by kissing down my neck, and we spent hours enjoying each other’s bodies. I met each of his kisses and instigated many of my own. His cock found its place inside me, and all troubles and doubts faded away. Pure bliss.

When our roaring bellies outweighed our lust, we ate a meal together before he dressed. He needed to go to the dock and check on the repairs for theCrimson Night.

“Behave yourself, boy,” he said with a smirk.

I nipped at his chin with my teeth. “I always behave.”

“Said the hook to the fish.”
