“I can’t believe they actually brought torches,” Nova complained. “Well, ain’t they bringing medieval back?”

The horde pushed forward. My pack shoved them back.

“I knew there was something not right with that Hunter girl,” Weasel bragged with a smug expression that I wanted to rip off his face.

Josie’s hand flew out to grab Nova’s hair. I caught her movement midmotion, gripping her wrist. “If you touch my woman,” I growled, pushing her arm away, “so help me, I’ll fucking kill you.” Josie swallowed hard, stepping back.

I angled my face in a silent warning to anyone who would dare try to attack Nova. The gang parted like the Red Sea as I continued to usher her along the path. I breathed a sigh of relief when we got inside to safety. Heidi was standing at her desk with tears running down her cheeks.

Nova walked up to Heidi. “What are you doing here? You just had triplets. You should be resting.”

“Bruce is home with the babies. I had to be here.” She sobbed. “What they’re doing to you is not right.”

Sally crossed her arms. “Heidi’s right. I came here in support of Nova.”

“Heidi. Sally.” I patted their shoulders. “Thank you, but go home. It’s dangerous right now. In fact, take the day off tomorrow.”

“No,” Heidi and Sally said in unison.

“I can’t just sit at home with my thumb up my ass while those jackasses outside are acting the fool,” Sally said.

“Me neither,” Heidi agreed.

“I appreciate you, but go home,” I ordered.

The last thing I needed was my staff getting attacked for standing in solidarity with Nova and me. They nodded, walking away reluctantly.

Pressing my palm against Nova’s lower back, I said, “Let’s go.” We made our way to the back of the station, where the cells were located.

I unlocked her handcuffs. “You okay, darling?” I rubbed her wrists.

“I’m okay,” she replied.

I brought her wrists up to my lips, kissing every inch of her skin slowly.

“Uh, Rhett…” Her pink tongue snaked out to wet her full lips, and that was when I saw the transformation of her eyes. “Your eyes,” Nova whispered. “They’re amber.”

“As are yours. If you needed proof that I’m yours and you’re mine, then here it is.”

Quinn yelled, “Rhett?” from the front of the station.

We broke apart, and I sighed heavily. “Duty calls,” I grumbled before opening the cell door.

Nova walked into the cell, plopping down on the edge of the bed. “You better find that killer fast, Protector, because you and I have some unfinished business.”

CHAPTER21

RHETT

I stood at the side of the town hall’s stage, staring out at the irate crowd chanting, “Justice. Justice. Justice.” All rational thought had flown out the window. Residents were acting like piranhas that smelled blood in the water.

“You can take your justice and shove it up your ass,” I grumbled.

“Enough!” Quinn exploded, glaring at the crowd.

Silence echoed throughout the space.

“Your behavior is deplorable,” he continued. “Because of your mob-like antics, I had to leave my pack behind at the station to keep the rest of the hooligans at bay.”
