“I did.” I glanced at my fingers as if they were foreign. “That’s never happened to me before.”

More proof that she’s ours…my inner beast crowed.

“Ditto, Sheriff.”

“You can call me Rhett.”

“So we’re on a first-name basis now?” Her lips curled up into a seductive smile.

Nova was more than beautiful.

She was intelligent, brave, and alpha to the core. Thick, curly chestnut hair framed her face. Her mahogany skin was accented with high cheekbones, and her full, pouty lips begged me to nibble and taste them.

I shrugged. “I don’t see why not, since I’m clearly not going to lock you up… today.”

She laughed huskily. “So you’re leaving that door of opportunity wide open, I see.”

“Yup.” I winked.

She eyed me. “Well, I have no aversion to handcuffs, given the right situation.”

Her words made my cock twitch, and a wild need to possess her raced through me. “Is that so?”

There was a loud commotion outside my office that made us jerk our heads in that direction. But even without the noise, I scented the person about to enter my office.

“You have a visitor,” I said.

This is the moment of truth… to confirm my suspicions.

Nova was so nervous that she swayed a little when she stood.

“You okay?” I asked, placing a hand against her lower back to steady her.

“No. I’m not,” she answered roughly, leaning into my touch for a moment longer.

The door banged open. Bonnie strode inside, racing across the office with such speed that her long kimono billowed around her tight leather dress like curtains. Quinn and Imani were on her heels.

“Quinn? Imani? Why are you here?” I asked. “I told you that I’d debrief you after I figured out what’s going on.”

“Bo asked us to hightail our asses over here,” Quinn replied. “She said she needed to tell us something really important.”

Without a word, Bonnie wrapped her arms around Nova, hugging her tightly. Nova hugged her back awkwardly.

After a beat of silence, Bonnie pulled back, cupping Nova’s face. “What took you so long to find me?”

“I didn’t know you existed until I found his letter.”

Bonnie frowned. “What letter?”

“The letter my father wrote, giving me directions how to get here.”

Tears glistened in Bonnie’s eyes. “God, you look so much like your father.”

“Where is he?” Nova asked.

“I’ll explain everything in a minute,” Bonnie answered, touching Nova’s hair. “But time is of the essence. Gossip travels fast in this town, and I’m worried about what will happen when the townsfolk find out about your Hunter bloodline.”

My stomach plummeted. “Nova’s a Hunter?” I felt light-headed from the disappointment. There was no way my fated mate could be a Hunter.
