Will they even like me?
I was human and a Protector.
I knew little about the shifter world, but I was pretty sure that wasn’t a wonderful combination.
But I didn’t give a shit.
Fergus was mine, and I wouldn’t let anyone chase me away.
He spoke quietly. “I will forever be yours, and you will forever be mine. I will protect and love you for all our lives, and I’ll let no harm come to you. That is my oath as your mate.”
His words held such tenderness that I felt my heart reaching out to him. Our connection was strong. It was as if I could physically touch it, hold it in my hands, and maybe even follow the connection back to him.
“As it is my oath to you, Fergus.” I tilted my head back enough so I could see him.
He leaned down to kiss me on my lips. Breaking the kiss, I turned around and straddled his hips. Grant and Cutter catcalled and whistled behind us, making Fergus turn and growl, but I only laughed.
“What? We gave you, like, four hours.” Cutter joined us at the fire with a toothy grin. “Glad to see you’re both still alive. Pay up, Grant.”
Turning to sit between Fergus’s legs, I glanced between the two shifters and watched as Grant grunted and then pulled a few bills from his wallet before handing them to Cutter.
“You made a bet?” I asked.
“On what?” Fergus asked.
“On whether she would stab you first,” Grant asked. “You let me down, Trinity.”
I laughed. “I claimed him. He’s mine. I wasn’t about to put holes in him.”
“I’m dealing with teenagers,” Fergus muttered, glaring at Cutter and Grant. “Did you at least do anything useful while you were away?”
“We found a new place to make camp. I suggest we move there.” Grant’s eyes turned dark. “There’s wolf stench in the air. I don’t like it. It’s too close for comfort.”
I felt Fergus stiffen before he shot to his feet, pulling me up with him. “Let’s get packed up.”
It wasn’t hard to get our packs ready to go. We put out the fire, and then our campsite looked as if no one had been there for days.
Grant and Cutter shifted to scout ahead, leaving Fergus and me to follow close behind.
Chapter 14
Fergus
The night closedin around us, and the wind picked up. The storm was ready to break, and I hoped we’d reach the new campsite soon.
Trinity held my hand throughout the whole trek. I enjoyed it and would gently squeeze hers now and then to make sure it was real, that she was really beside me as my mate.
I hadn’t marked her yet, but there’d be time for that later if we made it through the next few nights alive.
“Who were you really talking to this morning?” Trinity asked.
“When?”
“This morning. I asked if you were talking to your alpha, and you said yes. Obviously, you lied.” Lightly poking her tongue into her cheek, she asked, “Who was it?”
“My superior. Taggert. He’s technically my human alpha.”
She arched a brow. “Your what?”
