“You know what’s up,” Fergus responded.
“Obviously, I don’t. Tell me now, or I swear I’ll walk the fuck out into the woods and not turn back.” It hurt like hell that he didn’t trust me enough to be honest with me.
“She has a right to know if she’s going to be a… well, you know,” Cutter mumbled. Then he immediately buried his face back in his plate.
Grant threw a handful of snow at him and said, “Keep your mouth shut.”
I waited, but Fergus said nothing.
“Okay, I’m done.” I jumped up and made for the trees.
If he didn’t have enough faith in me to be truthful, then I didn’t need to be here.
Fergus was at my side in a shot, grabbing my arm. “Trinity, wait.”
I tried to shake off his hand, but it didn’t work. “Get your hand off me, Fergus.”
Over his shoulder, he barked, “Cutter, Grant, give us some time to talk alone.”
Once they cleared out, Fergus tugged me gently, but I refused to move.
“Are you going to be honest with me?” I asked.
“Yes.”
I allowed him to lead me back to the fire.
“Have a seat.” There was a growl to his words. He paced back and forth before me, hands curling into fists.
Damn, this must be terrible news. “Fergus, just tell me. It can’t be any worse than everything else that’s going on… Can it?”
Chapter 8
Trinity
I staredinto the fire and watched the flames flicker across the logs, consuming the bark and turning it from brown to white ash. That was what I felt like right now, like everything was consuming me, setting me on fire. I’d been sucked into a world I’d never known existed, and now I was fucking smack-dab in the middle of a shifter war.
This was a damn reality show from hell, and I was the lead character.
“Trinity, you haven’t said anything in a while,” Fergus whispered. He held my hand as he sat beside me.
We had our backs against a log. My eyes darted to the storm rolling in from the west. It wouldn’t hit for another couple of hours, but Fergus had told me he could already smell it on the wind. It would be rough to get through, but we’d make it.
“I’m just trying to understand.”
“Do you need me to explain it again?” he asked gently.
I shook my head. That was the last thing I needed.
Fergus had gone through the entire history between the wolves and the other shifters of the world so I could fully understand what Price was up to. That bastard wanted to start a war, and he was going to hunt me to do it. I was going to be the reason Fergus and his family’s lives would be in danger—all because of whom my parents had allegedly killed while they were alive.
What person wouldn’t want to learn all this in one sitting without a shot of vodka?
“So I guess we really don’t have a choice,” I finally whispered.
“About what?”
“Using me as bait. We have to stop them. I will not start a war.”
