But they were waiting.

Why?

My foot rolled onto something under the snow, and I noticed the large stick. Calmly, I bent down and picked it up, holding it like a bat.

“I’ll beat the shit out of you, assholes, if you come one step closer,” I threatened. “Get back. You hear me? Get away from me.”

They stepped closer. I swung at them, but they easily stayed out of my reach. I was too hungry, tired, and weak. The stick was heavier than it should have been in my grip.

Shit, when was the last time I’d eaten anything?

My leg throbbed, and I tried not to put weight on it, but then I was off-balance. Another wild swing caused me to fall to my side. “Dammit.”

The stick rolled away, and when I reached out a hand to grab it, one wolf snapped its jaws and leaped for it first, firmly planting its front paws on it.

I pulled back my hand. My heart raced, and my breathing was ragged. I would not cry from frustration, not now. I would not give them the satisfaction. If I was going to die, I’d die while somehow taking one of them out with me.

And I’d die without screaming or begging.

Hands going numb from the snow, I tried to crawl my way backward. The wolves only moved in closer and closer. I could feel their hot breaths on my skin, smell the blood of whatever they’d just killed. It made me gag.

The wolves stopped. Their ears twitched. The one in the middle tilted its head and turned, almost looking confused. I wasn’t sure what was going on until I saw the giant shape of a bear lumbering toward us, full speed.

A polar bear?

The bear rammed into the three wolves and sent them scattering, just as another grizzly, smaller than the one I remembered, with no special markings, ran up next to me. The logical part of my mind screamed at me to run, but there was something about the eyes. This bear would not hurt me. It stood in front of me protectively and snarled as the polar bear closed in, and the three wolves charged back.

The white bear roared and swatted the first wolf away with its paw, but the other two lunged for its back. I watched from behind the grizzly as the wolves scratched and bit the other bear. The grizzly reared back on its hind legs, enormous feet just inches from crushing me, before it charged forward and went to pull the wolves off its comrade.

I scooted back in the snow and kept going until I heard another growl right behind me. Something large breathed down my neck, and I froze.

Paws appeared on either side of me, and when I tilted my head back, I was staring into the scarred black muzzle of Boyle. The scar he had as a human was even more terrifying on his wolf’s face.

The black wolf raised a lip, flashing bloodstained canines. I tried to move away, but I wasn’t fast enough. Boyle’s jaws opened, and he bit down on my shoulder. I screamed as I felt his teeth tearing through flesh and into the bone. Hot tears pricked my eyes as I punched Boyle’s face, trying to make him let go, but all he did was bite down harder. Blood warmed my arm as it trailed down my shoulder. The pain was immense, and my vision blurred. He dragged me backward, and I knew this was it. This was going to be the end.

The ground shook beneath my body, and whining filled my ears. Several of the wolves scattered. I tried to see what was happening, tried to focus.

A third bear appeared behind the first two, twice their size. That was Fergus. The markings on his back were as plain as day, even with the snow falling heavier and heavier. The bear’s lips pulled back in an ugly snarl. It opened its mouth, stood up on its hind legs, and roared so loud it hurt my ears. Boyle instantly released me and jumped in front of me. But the bear wasn’t having any of it.

It roared again and fell back on all fours, ready to charge forward, when a distant howl made Boyle’s ears flinch back. He looked as if he still wanted to attack the bear, but the howl sounded again, louder, closer. Boyle briefly howled back, growled at the others, and then took off back into the valley.

I forced myself to stay conscious a little longer, even as my blood dripped through my torn coat and into the snow. I was cold, and it was only getting worse.

I stared at the large grizzly and then watched in awe as it transformed from an animal back to a very naked Fergus.

Even through the pain, all I could think was,Damn. My other weakness—a man with a gigantic cock.

He was tall—well over six feet, if I had to guess. His skin was tanned everywhere. He was definitely an outdoorsman. An air of authority radiated from him, and it turned me on even more.

“Trinity, can you hear me?” He hurried toward me, not caring about his nakedness. “Trinity?”

His penetrating blue eyes locked on mine with intense attention.

“You told the truth,” I stated.

“I would never lie to you, darling.” He smirked, but it didn’t erase the worry in his eyes. “Just hang on. We’ll get you back to camp.”

I barely had the strength to nod before I felt him scooping me up into his arms.
