I caughtup to Cutter as he observed the wolves from atop a ridge. We were upwind, so the wolves couldn’t smell us, not that they could tell the difference between the old scent and where they were now. Their focus was on finding their next campsite.

They were in human form. It would be so easy to catch them off guard and take them out now.

But I had my orders.

“What’s the news?” Cutter asked while I shifted back to human form.

Grabbing my set of clothes, I got dressed. “Fergus wants us back at camp. He has Trinity.”

“He has her? I thought we were staying out of her affairs.”

“We were, but she has a fever and an infection somewhere. She wouldn’t last another night on her own, so he’s taken it upon himself to rescue her.”

Something in my tone made Cutter laugh. “Is it like we thought?”

“I believe so. Our alpha has finally found a mate, no matter how much he’s fighting it.” I grinned as Cutter laughed quietly.

For years, we’d been hoping to find the right woman for Fergus. He’d been set up with every single woman we could find, and now it took us being in the woods, hunting down one of the most dangerous wolf-shifter packs, for him to find her. It was unusual that she was a human, but shifter-human couples weren’t anything new. It was just uncommon for her to be the alpha’s mate.

Cutter continued, “Then I guess we’d better get back to camp. I need to check in at home again and make sure Kyle isn’t bringing down the house.”

“Or starting a war of his own,” I growled.

We backed into the shadows of the trees. The sky had darkened once more. More storms were on the way. I could smell it in the breeze every time it blew.

I had to catch Cutter up on what I’d heard, too. It still baffled me why the wolf-shifters would kidnap Trinity and who wanted her so badly.

As far as I knew, the woman was nothing special. We’d already run a check on her, just to see if she had any connection to the wolves. But not a thing out of the ordinary had come up. She was a woman who had been abandoned as a baby. There was zilch interesting until she’d gone to college, graduated, and taken her current job, escorting the wealthy on adventure trips.

But most women I knew, humans or shifters, didn’t have that fire I’d seen in her eyes. With her determination to keep going, to live, she had a powerful will, and I was curious to see if Fergus would realize she was his true mate.

Chapter 13

Trinity

I was moving, but I wasn’t sure how. I felt warm, like I was floating in air. Somehow, I must have passed out, but the last thing I remembered was falling out of the crevice.

How long has it been?

What if I’m not alone?

I screamed as I thought of being captured by Price. I fought against whatever was holding me, breaking away from its warmth.

I wanted to be let go.

I would not be eaten alive. It would not happen. I’d die first. I screamed and punched, trying to get away, but I quickly exhausted myself.

A gentle touch brushed against my forehead, soothing me. I relaxed slowly and opened my eyes, only to see shadows around me.

People.

Have I been rescued?

“You’re going to be all right,” a rough, masculine voice declared. “Lie back and try to relax.”

“Wolves… They were shifters,” I whispered.
