None of the wolves appeared in the campsite, and no eyes glowed in the darkness nearby. They were too busy howling at the moon and probably hunting more elk. After a few more steps and then a few more, I turned and sprinted deeper into the forest. I didn’t pay attention to where I ran. I just took off blindly into the darkness.

This is insane.

I needed to find help, any help.

I ran and ran. My chest burned from breathing in the cold air, but I forced myself to keep going. We weren’t too far from the river. If I could make it there tonight, then at least I’d have fresh water.

Would they lose my scent if I crossed it?

Part of me doubted it, but it was worth a try.

I slid to a stop in the mud and froze.

“You’ve got to be shitting me,” I groaned in horror as a hulking form came out of the shadows.

I gulped and took a few hesitant steps back, but it was too late. The monstrous beast had seen me and was headed my way with a quick, lumbering gait. With my heart hammering and my blood thundering away in my ears, I was surprised to find I was still on my feet.

The bear turned completely around, staring into the forest. It stood on its hind legs and roared in fury. I had a second to notice the strange markings on the bear’s back before it circled to face me, locking eyes on me.

It was the bear from my dreams.

When it trudged closer to me, I scrambled back too quickly, falling onto my ass. The gigantic bear snarled in my face.

Oh damn. He’s going to eat me.

I nearly pissed on myself when it sniffed my neck. Then it barked once, a small, huffed sound.

“Please,” I pleaded.

Then I stopped dead when its coarse tongue licked my neck.

Holy shit.

My limbs shook, and darkness consumed me.

Chapter 20

Fergus

Gently,I nudged her with my paw and then my nose, but she didn’t move. Instinctively, I inhaled deeply to investigate her scent, just as I would with anyone I’d met for the first time.

Fuck.

The tantalizing combination of vanilla and cinnamon raced up my nostrils and shot straight to my bulging erection, making it jerk.

My bear growled, signaling that he wanted to investigate her mouthwatering scent further.

Damn. She’s trouble.

I backed up to beat a hasty retreat, and then I stopped dead in my tracks. She was going to freeze to death if I left her in the mud. With one last glance around to ensure I was alone, I shifted back into a man and scooped the woman up into my arms.

The second I glanced down at her face, my heart skipped a beat. Not only was I drawn to her beauty, but I was also strangely driven to protect her.

Absolutely beautiful.

Mine, my bear growled.

Fuck no,I hissed back.
