Josh’s pack was notoriously traditional and didn’t breed with humans like other wolf-shifter packs did.

So what was this human doing with them?

But I had another reason for my rule of waiting before charging in claws first. The one time we’d rushed in after getting a visual of our target, the people had been innocent of the crimes I’d been told they had committed. I’d known we should have waited to watch them actually shift to know for sure if they were what my squad and I hunted.

Never again would I make the same damn error.

Grant nudged me and pointed. “I guess they’re done with their foreplay for the night.”

I looked on as Price headed back to the fire and the woman vanished into her tent. “Good. Cutter, you have first watch. Wake me up in two hours.”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say,” Cutter responded dryly.

I growled in warning, sensing Cutter’s unexpected need for a fight, but I wasn’t in the fucking mood. I needed to get my suddenly frayed thoughts together.

Walking to find a comfortable place in the soil, I sat down beneath a tree and closed my eyes, hoping to have a dreamless sleep, but all I saw was that damn woman’s beautiful face.

Chapter 11

Trinity

I calledthe local park ranger station, which, unfortunately, was nowhere near us and checked in to let them know of my group’s progress. We talked for a few minutes to verify my group still had enough supplies and the weather would hold out. I was told the temperature should stay steady, but they’d let me know if it was going to drop drastically. I thanked the park ranger and then hung up.

I held the phone in my hand for a long time before finally deciding I needed to tell somebody about what had happened with Josh.

I dialed Halle’s number, knowing I’d likely be yelled at for using the satellite phone for personal reasons, and I waited impatiently for her to pick up.

After five rings, I finally heard her voice come on the line. “Hello?”

“Halle, it’s Trinity.”

“Hey. Why are you calling? Is something wrong?” She yawned loudly. “You know you’re going to get your ass chewed out for using this phone, right?”

“Don’t care about that shit right now,” I murmured.

“So something is wrong?” Halle asked.

“No, not exactly. Shit, maybe. I don’t know,” I answered, holding my head. “Damn, I think I might have crossed a line. Now I’m not exactly sure what to do about it.”There.It was now out in the open.

Silence radiated from the other end before she asked, “Wait, did you sleep with Josh?”

“What? Fuck no—not yet, at least.”Shit, I sounded like some skanky whore.

Halle laughed. “Oh man, Trinity, breaking your own rules?”

I blew out a breath in frustration. “It’s not funny,” I argued. “We just kind of made out against a tree a few minutes ago. I’m not even sure why I did it.” I really wasn’t. Yes, Josh was hot, but he wasn’t my type.

“You find him attractive. I don’t blame you. He’s gorgeous, Trinity.”

I wanted to disagree. Something was still bugging me about him. “Can you do me a favor when you get in tomorrow?”

“Sure. What do you need?”

“See what you can dig up on Josh Price. Something about him doesn’t seem right.”

“Trinity, he passed the background checks. I’m sure he’s fine. You’re probably just nervous… When was the last time you had sex?”

“Months,” I blurted out.
