“Sinthia,” he said my name as if testing it on his tongue. “Is that your signature?”
I tightened my lips, fighting back the impending flood of tears. “I swear, this was not what I thought I was agreeing to.”
He inclined his head slightly. “Let this be a lesson. Read things thoroughly before you sign.”
This just didn’t make sense. Why didn’t Tabitha tell me my investor was McKay?
I bit my lip, thinking about that day she’d brought me the contract. My stomach dropped when I remembered she’d seemed entirely too happy. In fact, come to think of it, she had been practically giddy that she’d found me the deal I needed to solve all my business problems.
He looked at me coldly. “Can you pay back my two million dollars plus interest today?”
Now he was toying with me.
He knew damn well I didn’t have the money, and I sure as hell couldn’t get it.
In desperation mode, I shifted my thoughts immediately to Jade, but I couldn’t borrow the money from her because her assets were tied up in a big business venture to take the script she wrote and independently produce the film version.
I sputtered, “What the fuck do you want, McKay? Because—” I stopped mid-sentence, feeling warm and tingly as he stared at me with hooded eyes.
His physical magnetism was palpable. I swallowed hard, trying not to squirm under his sensuous stare.
Bastard. He wants me to beg. Well, that shit isn’t happening.
Our eyes locked.
“I know you don’t expect me to fuck you so you’ll forget about this whole loan thing?”
He actually laughed at me as if I’d just told a joke. The sly sound ruffled my nerves.
“Do you really think I have to pay to get fucked?” he replied.
Such an arrogant ass.
I ground my teeth. “Then what do you want?”
“Not a damn thing but my money plus interest.” He narrowed his eyes. “I’m not sure you’re able to produce a profit, darling. My sources tell me your retailers are getting cold feet about the viability of your collection. They’re pulling out of your deals.”
I flinched like he’d physically slapped me. “Bullshit! I have concrete agreements with each of them.”
“You really don’t know shit about contracts. Nothing in business is concrete. That’s what loopholes and a shitload of well-paid lawyers are for.” He shot me an irritated glare. “I can tell you don’t believe the shit I’m saying, so call Lily Sanchez.”
I narrowed my eyes. “How do you know Lily?” I asked with disbelief ringing in my voice.
He shrugged. “Just call her.” He cocked his head. “She’ll confirm the gravity of your situation.”
I pulled out my cell. My fingers trembled, but I willed them to stop. I would not break down in front of this prick. I called her.
“Hello, Sin. How are you?” Lily asked.
“Shitty. Look, is everything good to go with my collection deal?”
Lily cleared her throat. My stomach dropped.
“I was going to call you, Sin. I don’t know what the hell is going on, but the financial planners are seriously discussing backing out of your deal.”
I jumped up, turning my back on Core. “What the hell happened?” I whispered.
“Don’t know. I’m still trying to find out. All I know is this is bigger than you or me.”
