It had been such a busy couple of weeks, with Jade wrapping up shooting for her television show and me frantically trying to finish my collection, that we hadn’t managed much communication, except for brief calls and texts.

“Hmm?” I asked before popping a forkful of mac and cheese into my mouth.

“Don’thmmme. Why did you run from Core?”

“He scared the shit out of me,” I confessed. “No other man has ever made me feel so utterly consumed and possessed.”

It was ridiculous how much I’d let my hot foreplay session with Core rattle me. The way his lips had devoured mine, the roughness of his callused fingers against my skin, and the overwhelming urge to fall to my knees, begging him to take me in any position he saw fit, had spurred a surprising fight-or-flight response.

I’d chosen flight, which was terrifying and humiliating.

When I’d weaved my way back into the gala, my palms had been sweaty and my heart had been beating so fast I seriously had thought I was one step away from having a heart attack. Not wanting to spend another minute at the gala, I’d faked a migraine and told Jade I needed to leave early. Thankfully, Kirby, Jade’s chauffeur had dropped me at home, leaving Jade to ride home with her mother. And later that night, I’d crawled into bed with Core’s name on my lips and my fingers playing with my womanhood.

“I’m going to need a lot more slutty details,” Jade demanded in a singsong voice.

“Okay.” I covered my eyes. “I almost hiked up my gown and fucked him right there on the rooftop.” I peeked through my fingers. “I’m a slut, right?”

Jade blinked twice, hard. “Uh . . . no.”

I frowned at her. “There was hesitation in your response.”

Her eyes were filled with laughter. “Because I just don’t get it. If you want to have sex with him, go ahead and do it. You’re a sensual woman. He’s a smoking-hot billionaire. You’re both obviously attracted to each other. Just fuck him and walk away.” She shrugged. “No biggie.”

If only it were that simple . . .

The memory of his touch, taste, and voice was already imprinted on my body and mind. Just the thought of the emotional damage he could inflict once I let him into my body made my mouth taste like sawdust.

The smiling waiter meandered up to us.

“So? Are you going to fuck him or not?” Jade demanded.

The waiter swallowed hard, watching us with wide eyes. “Anything else?” he croaked.

“No, we’re good,” I replied unblinkingly.

He hurried away like he couldn’t move fast enough.

I turned to Jade. “No, I’m not going to have sex with Core.”

“Uh-huh,” Jade responded before taking a sip of her drink, peering at me over the rim.

I pursed my lips. “Don’t stare at me like that.”

“You’re lying to yourself. I saw how you were eye-banging Core at the gala.”

“I want him. That’s a fact.” I sighed. “But business and hot sex don’t mix.”

“Since when?”

My mind yelled,Since Core!

Taking a sip of my drink, I remained silent.

Jade continued, undeterred. “What would it hurt if you just saw where this thing with him might go?”

I shook my head. “Given my bad luck with men, it will be disastrous.”Both emotionally and financially.

“Such a drama queen.” Jade rolled her eyes heavenward. “Admit it. You’re scared of getting hooked on his hot ass.”
