“Caden.” Older guy extended his hand. “My name is Miguel, Carlos sent me.”
Caden drew his gun on Miguel.“How did you find us?”
Miguel stopped in his tracks. His hands held up at his side. The knife dangled between his thumb and forefinger.
“He told you we would meet you, no?” Miguel asked.
“Yeah, when we got to Columbia.” Caden lowered the gun.
“You need a boat. We brought a boat.” The small guy reached in his pocket.
Caden drew down on him.
I clicked off the safety, placed both hands on my gun, and covered the other guy. I’d never pointed a gun at a person before. My body tensed and sweat popped out on my brow. I regretted the sweatshirt.
“Whoa.” Little guy put his hands up. “Just getting my phone.”
He kept one hand up and the other he tapped his phone and held it up.
“Que?”
“Señor,” Little guy spoke into the phone. “Your friend no believe us. He pulled his gun on us. His lady too.” Little guy laughed.
The voice on the phone cursed in Spanish and laughed.“Caden, mi amigo. How the hell are you?”
Caden relaxed a bit.
Little guy walked and sat the phone on the hood of our truck.Caden picked it up, took the phone off speaker, and brought the phone to his ear.Caden listed for a few seconds, adding no more on his end of the conversation besides a ‘yep’ and a grunt. He hung up.
“We’re following you.” Caden tossed the phone back to Miguel.
They both got back in their car.
Caden climbed back into the truck. I opened my door.
“Are we really going to follow them?” I climb in.
“It doesn’t look like we have a choice.”
“What did the guy say?” I buckled my seat belt.
“Just told me I could trust his guys. They have a boat. It will take us to Carlos’ compound by water.” Caden put the car in gear.
“Of course, we have a choice. We drive in the other direction.” The adrenaline wore off. My focused bravado had turned to plain terror.
“It’s fine. I knew we’d have to get an escort.” Caden squeezed my hand. “It’s not like I can find Carlos’ house on Google maps.” He chuckled.
I bit my lip to keep from screaming. I took my hand away. If he was going to shut me out, I would do the same.
“I promise, baby. We are fine.”
I ignored him.
Caden sighed.
“Ah, gringo,” the little guy yelled out the window. “Now I drive real fucking fast, so keep up.” He cackled.
My heart dropped. Little guy quotedPulp Fiction. It did not make me feel better.
