MASE

Anna and I stood in the hallway of the hospital with the doctor going over Grace's injuries.

Physically she would be fine, broken ribs, a concussion and a broken collarbone. A wound on her thigh was older than her other injuries, he wasn’t sure how that one occurred, maybe in the accident. My girl was strong.

She had gotten at least two shots off as my father made his exit.

When the opportunity arose, Derrick’s words rang true, I took the shot anyway, but he got away.

The Guardians and Lady Guardians were at the compound tying up loose ends and searching the tunnels.

Papa Scott was in the wind, but if I knew my father, he would already be plotting his return.

I would make damn sure I was ready when he arrived.

Anna’s phone was blowing up with incoming text messages and calls.

“You better get that.” I pointed.

“What?” She looked down. “Oh.”

“You okay?” I reached out and touched her arm.

She bit her nail and nodded.

“Just the adrenaline you know.”

I knew that all too well.

She grabbed the phone.

“It’s Dana, Stick’s best friend.” She pointed to her phone and stepped to the side. “Dana, if you go into labor right now, Stick is going to kill you. Calm the fuck down.”

I liked Grace’s president. She was tough and could handle herself.

“You can go in and see her in a little while.” The nurse said and walked away.

“Mase.” His little voice echoed down the hall. I turned and spotted Cason holding hands with YoYo. I told him to bring him here as soon as he could. Grace would need to see he was okay.

The room was filled with Guardians and Lady Guardians.

He let go of YoYo’s hand and ran toward me.

I dropped to a knee and the kid leaped in my arms.

He weighed nothing, but his impact punched me in the heart like a wrecking ball.

He clung to my neck. I figured he’d been surrounded by strangers for the last three days. I was a familiar face.

I ran my hands through his hair, over his little head and down his back. Had to feel for myself he was okay.

I stood up and carried him over to a chair and sat down. I sat him on my lap.

“You okay?” I asked and continued to examine him for any sign he wasn’t.

“Yeah.” He frowned and nodded. “Where’s Mommy?” He asked.
