“My father killed Mattie.”

“No.” Derrick stepped toward me. “It was my fault. I let him die.”

My hands shook. Was I about to kill my best friend? My brain swirled.

I charged, put the gun right between his eyes.

He leaned back.

I followed him as he stumbled off his bike.

Safety was off.

My finger rested gently on the trigger.

All I had to do was squeeze.

He let my brother die, which meant he could have prevented it and failed.

It explained why he left.

Explained everything.

So why couldn’t I do it?

Red grabbed the gun and wrestled it out of my hands, while Joey grabbed my arms and pushed me back.

“Everyone just shut the fuck up.” YoYo climbed off his bike and held his hands up. “We have a lot of shit to unfold, but priorities men.”

Red turned to me, uncocked my gun, and set the safety.

I narrowed my eyes.

What could be more important then ending the life of man who killed my brother?

"Gracie." Derrick said as if reading my mind.

Grace was in trouble, but she could hold her own for a little while longer. My girl was tough, and deadly.

YoYo grabbed my collar.

“They got Cason, too.” He shook me.

That I wasn’t expecting.

I pushed him away and bent over as the wind escaped my lungs. I spent four minutes with my son and the thought of losing him forever messed with my head.

“Where did they take them?” I stood back up.

“Where do you think?” Joey said. “Back to the compound.”

I backed up and headed toward my bike. I slung my leg over. Red was a half step behind me.

“Where are you going?” He asked.

“Where the fuck do you think I’m going?” I started my bike. “I’m going to get my family.”

“You can’t just barge into the Dragons compound and demand shit.” He had the collar of my cut. “They are waiting for you. With a standing order to shoot first and ask questions later. You are the Dragons enemy number one.”
