GRACE

Istopped at the next intersection and blew Mase a kiss before revving my engine and peeling out. I knew he’d give me a good talking to for it. And probably a lecture on bike safety that would rival one of those boring safety videos. I giggled as I gunned it.

My euphoria was short lived.

A black van pulled out in front of me. I was going way too fast to avoid it.

I laid the bike down and skidded a few feet, my bike continued to skid through the intersection and rested near the curb.

The pain shot up through my arm and my jeans quickly became soaked with blood. I pushed myself up, and checked my arm.

I pulled my helmet off and it rolled a few feet away.

I checked on my leg. My jeans were torn. My skin was on fire.

The van doors flew open.

I looked up.

Four guys fell out of the open door. It reminded me of a car full of clowns. These clowns had guns drawn. I reached for mine, but it was in the compartment on my bike.

Stupid mistake.

All the men wore bandanas around their mouths, but no mistaking the emblem on their jackets. They were SouthEast Dragons.

Two sets of hands grabbed at me.

I kick and punch.

One guy had his arm around my waist. His arm was thin.

I reached around and pinched his bicep and he cried out and dropped me.

I scrambled forward, but another arm wrapped around my throat. He wasn’t so thin; in fact his arm was massive and full of hair. He smelled like cigarettes and musky sweat.

I opened my mouth to scream.

He covered it.

I reached for my knife.

“You might want to rethink that.” He yanked my head back and spun me around. A black SUV pulled up next to the grey van. As it rolled by slowly, the back window came down. A man I didn’t recognize leaned back and I saw him.

My son.

They had my son.

Cason had his attention on something on the other side of the van. He couldn’t see me. Thank God. I heard him giggle and the man next him glared at me and chuckled. The window rolled back up.

I dropped the knife on the ground.

“That’s better.” The man holding me up said.

All the strength had left my body. I was a rag doll, limp in his arms. I felt helpless. All the talk of protecting my son and he was in the hands of the enemy. Another thought hit me. I knew with all my heart, Josey would have fought to the death for him.

If she’s … I whimpered and shook the thought out of my head. I couldn’t worry about it right now.
